I'm just back home from seeing the QM2 in Rotterdam and can describe it as ONE BIG THRILL!!! What a great ship. Her bow looks better as I ever could have imagined- she really has won my heart! I'm now going to upload my digital images.

From the national news: Several thousands of spectators were there to see the ship's depart. Traffic was stuck around the quay (near the Erasmusbrug). 18 buses with passengers -back from excursion- were back ontime, under police escort. The goodbye was the best one I've ever seen. For the Dutch members: did you notice the Feyenoord flag on one of her stern decks?

I hope everybody who was with the 'escorting trip' organised by Poseidon, had a great time. Would like to hear all about it!

I am also just back home.

The QM2 is a marvellous ship, certainly from the outsied, and very very big...you could see her funnel miles from the quay in the suburbs coming from the motorway.

I don't come often in Rotterdam, but I had the impression, the city was in quite a festive mood, with lots of people of al kind walking all over the place to the waterside to see the ship.

The ship left half an hour late, but made a wonderful goodbye on her horns, as thousands waved goodbye as she sailed to the sunset.

Several dutch flags were hanging from the balconies, and among them the "Feyenoord" flag.

I met Jochen and we talked a lot, and he introduced me to Chris Cunard, so we had quite a meeting.

There was some rain, but as the time of departure neared the sun broke through.

I must say I am glad I went to see the QM2 in Rotterdam.

Here are some pictures :

Hi All,

Just back from an exhausting but wonderful day, the day started out a bit misty and the weather was not lively. I met Jochen early in the morning and briefly met Chris to say hello when he got off the ship. Spend the rest of the morning making pictures with Jochen at the Wilhelminakade and in the early evening I boarded the party boot Smaragd II to watch QM2 depart and follow her for some time and watched her sail into the setting sun. The weather turned out bright and sunny and I met Ben (Maasdam) who was also onboard. Had a very great time. The ship is impressive and her design is best appreciated from a distance when you can see the ship in totality. Close by she is mainly large massive surfaces because of her overly scaled proportions. What amazed me most was not her length but her height. Security was not over the top (as I was afraid it would be) you could nicely stand in front and aft of the ship (BTW that stern stays strange looking)

My conventional pictures have to wait but I will upload some of my digital pictures as soon as I can.

Best, Onno

Unfortunately she laid deep and her bulbous bow was submerged (if not I would have done it)

I posted some of my digicam pictures in the galleries. During the tour on the party boat I also spotted the Anastasis sitting in dry-dock, I also took a picture but that one has to be developed first.

Enjoy, Onno

Nice Pictures Rob and Johan, now I can see QM2 depart from your point of view. I can see the party boat Smaragd II where I was on in some of the pictures. I also took a close up picture of the quay, Ill post it when I have it so that you can see if you can spot your self!

Did you also notice the radar boat (de majesteit I believe) and the high sound It’s steam whistle made, it even made more “real” steam than the QM2 whistle did.

Best, Onno

Hi Onno,

Your photos look great too. I saw the Smaragd II passing by for several times, I've got it close up on video too. I also saw how several small boats were leaded away by the police as soon they entered the forbidden zone around the ship. The steamwhistle of the Majesteit made quite a sound and it was great to see the dots of smoke going up. I just read that the event was seen by around 200000 spectators.

Hi Rob,

I would believe that without a doubt! As we sailed along with QM2 everywhere there was a dockside crowds of people were looking, the top of the Euromast looked like it was invaded by ants. Jochen and I wondered how many pictures would have been taken yesterday, but it must be millions. it was hard to take an original picture, if you had a good angle there were many people behind you waiting to make a picture from the same angle.

Nevertheless the experience of the whole day is certainly memorable.

I surely can believe there were that many people...Rotterdam was really in a special mood. Everywhere you saw people going to the waterside to see the ship.

I liked your pictures, Rob and Onno, but as you said...it was rather difficult to take original pictures. Lots of film and pixels...but worth.

I did see and hear De Majesteit responding with her horn to that of QM2 - lots of white cloud and a slightly higher and more raspier voice ...

I wonder how it must have been on the QM2 herself to be escorted out that way, with all those massive crowds to wave you out, not only in Rotterdam but the day before in Hamburg too (300 000 viewers...)...

Quite the triumphal entree for QM2 in Europe ... I wonder how Cunard/Carnival will respond to these massive shows of goodwill and intrest. It is clear not only Americans/Britishers are interested in QM2, Cunard and cruises.

J

Onno,
Glad you were bless with a better weather than when QM2 came in Southampton in December!
Your perspective is interesting, what did you think of her voice?
I will have to try the bulbous bow when she comes in Cherbourg!
We hope to see your Anastasis pictures soon in the classic oceanliner topic?
Best,

From two parts of the ship I didn't know where they are for. Here two of my photos:

Here you see two pipes coming out- What is their purpose?

And here you see some metal, longshaped 'rings' standing out, at the right of the last lifeboat.

Who knows what they are for?

I think they are sort of cranes for lowering the inflatable lifeboats (the cylinders/canisters you can see in the picture)

I also think about that sort of function, but it doesn't directly leads to them (when used as a sort of sliding). Those selfinflating lieboats are located beneath it, so that's odd.

We had a discussion before what the use is for those pipes (can’t find it that quickly), It could be that they have something to do with gas turbines, If you look at stern pictures of let’s say Brilliance of the Seas you can see similar pipes coming from her stern. Pam made some good close-ups of the pipes, they leave a trail of black soot upwards. It was already noticeable on the first day she arrived at Southampton. (maybe that is why they covered the railing with a sort of canvas)

Hi - just got off QM2 in Southampton - depressed to be off that amazing ship. Was great to see you guys in Rotterdam - looking at the pics trying to see if i am there - for most of the departure we were under the bridge on the deck infront of atlantic room - but went walking around as we progressed out of the port. was upgraded to balcony room - 8.097 - very nice. Rotterdam gave exellent sendoff - hamburg was amazing, over 1mil and fireworks display as well as people camping the night to see send off. met some amazing people aboard who will be sadly missed - must go back on QM2 again. a full report will be uploaded when i am not on internet cafe. return to australia on the 26th and will get some of the 300+ photos online at www.qm2.cjb.net - was honored with tour of bridge and thankyou to Captain Wright and Ben Lyons. Also - Bill Miller was aboard - very nice man knows so much about ships - got photo with him. Planetarium was amazing, Royal court theatre was also amazing, with rotating stage and steps that pop out of the floor - she is quite a ship. sister had a wonderful time and wants me to emphasise that the restaurants were fantastic. parents also loved it. lots of ex QE2 pax on. quite a few younger people aboard - most in families who keep 2 themselves- got friendly with a english girl who ill miss... anyways must go the pound doesnt get me very far on the net - keep lookout for more info.. ciao.

Chris – good to hear you had a great time and enjoyed the send off in Rotterdam (I did my best!)

Rob - here is a picture that Pam made, it shows the objects are hanging over the inflatable lifeboats. I can only speculate about the use but they surely have to do something with the safety equipment.

For the Dutch members: the Algemeen Dagblad newspaper has a full page about QM2, with interviews of passengers, stories about the pilots, the spectators, and the traffic jams. The frontage shows an beautiful airview photo of the depart. I don't know what the other newspapers show, just saw this one till now

This week's Elsevier also has an article about her & the shipboard life.
