I wonder how hard it would be to stowaway on a ship? I mean getting on would be the tough part but once there could one lay low enough as to stay on board all cruise? Probaly before all this new security not after. New clothes would be a problem too. And what fun is a cruise without the alcohol?

In the British documentary of the Island Escape, one item was about a woman who managed to get onboard and eventually was noticed because of her shabby looks. As they sailed on full seas she was sent in the ship's prison and it caused difficulties to get her off; simply because the next ports of call didn't want her. In the meantime, the ship's Captain is responsible for the stowaway.

When visiting the Oosterdam while moored in Amsterdam, last year september, an obviously confused Italian tried to manage to get himself onboard by using the crew entry at the lower deck. He was picked up by the security officers. For a photo of it see my site.

After 9/11 the security is of such a high level (for example personal photos linked to your cruise card) that it should be virtually impossible to embark a ship illegally. An succesfull attempt would show that the security officers have failed.

I think once on board the trick is to act normal and participate in the cruising. Like Rob said in the docu soap of Island Escape the woman was only noticed because of her shabby appearance (makes me wonder how she got on board) and because she acted very strangely or at least not typical cruise passenger like.

It makes me wonder why on earth you want to be a stowaway on nowadays cruise ships? It’s not like in the old days someone had a need to travel but not the money for it. I couldn’t act like I was enjoying my stowaway cruise!

Its very easy to get aboard a cargo ship espcially chineese ones. When berthed in Southampton on the QM2 In January, one of the musicians from the QM2 had a few to drinks in southampton centre. He boarded a chineese cargo ship, which was near by and woke up at 7 a.m. in their mess. And realised he was on the wrong ship and walked back to the QM2 unchallenged.
I wont name the musician, but if anyone is sailing on the QM2, just ask any of the musicians who sailed the inaugral cruise. They will be delighted to give you the finer details.

From Whitestar's link:
quote:
Sleeping would present no problem since I knew I could sleep openly out in a lounge, which is not uncommon on a cruise ship since liquor is so plentiful and cheap that passengers often pass out in the public rooms.

LOL Great story, almost too good to be true but very interesting..thanks for the link!
