Does anybody know what the Universal Explorer will be doing after this latest round the world cruise? They used to cruise south America but I can no longer find that web site. Heres a good old gal still steaming along.

Hello steeplechase,

you certainly mean the UNIVERSE EXPLORER.
It is expected that the ship will be sold for scrapping after it completes the job for its current operator.
It will be replaced by the OLYMPIA EXPLORER (to be renamed UNIVERSE EXPLORER).

Another classic to leave...

Patrick

Hello Patrick,

I had heard Universe Explorer was being replaced by Olympia Explorer and put up for sale. I also heard Universe Explorer was in excellent condition.

Where did read she was being sold for scrap? Is it official?

Well if the price is right, the breakers would definately pick her up. Besides, the current owners can't ask for alot of money... I bet the onboard student would like the upgrade!

I hope World Explorer Cruises buy her back!

The Universe Explorer is indeed in good condition and I am sure World Explorer Cruises if still around would be very interested in her! Even if they got someone else to buy her and then just Chartered her Year Round that would be probably the BEST choice for her! Unless they work out a deal with the current owners for a Full Charter of her???? I think World Explorer would do very well with the current Universe Explorer doing their 14 day Alaska cruises and maybe expanding their unique itineraries eslewhere too!!

I think she will probably find employment, Who owns the Universe Explorer??? I dont know if they would sell her for scrap or if they have other plans for her!! I dont think she is owned by The Institute for SHipboard Education as I believe they only Charter her!

I always thought Comodore owned here, I can no longer find World Explorer web site. I guess they will no longer offer the South American cruises. Where did you here that they will get World Explorer?

I think she's owned by a company affiliated to C.Y. Tung (from Hong Kong or thereabouts).

Let's face it: she's 46 years old, steam powered, and scrap prices are going through the roof. So. is she going for scrap? most probably yes

The UNIVERSE EXPLORER is owned by Mariser Marine from San Francisco.
Currently there is no real indication that she'll be scrapped. But this was true for the ALBATROS and ASSEDO as well and it happened anyway and quite unexpected.
Even if the vessel is well maintained, this might not always guarantee a good future for it.

Anyway, let's hope the best for her.

Patrick

Patrick; Do u know anything on World Explorer Cruises??

I know that after they lost their Charter of Universe Explorer they halted operations, but appear to still be interested in re-starting operations! I'm not sure if its just a funding problem or if they have actually been looking for a replacement ship??

I would think their would be a number of ships suitable for their needs as with the $$ and the marketing and in this case World Explorer already has the experience in Sailing for over 15 years they should be able to come back stronger than ever on a year round basis!

But I would expect it is $$ as their have been a number of ships that we're and still are on the market that are Very suitable for them!

An example is Tropical Islander(ex Caribic Star) and a number of other ships on the market, even the Olivia! And I guess in a few months their former Ship the Universe Explorer( if they wanted to continue with their style of cruising she would be ideal..only til 2010 though!)

I always thought World Explorer had alot of potential for they we're the ONLY company sailing a 14 day cruise to Alaska from Vancouver giving passengers More time to see more ports than any other cruise line operating the Alaska run! They also didn't seem to have a problem selling their cruises either and they seem to have gotten a good $$ for their cruises too!

I had wondered why World Explorer wasn't able to get a replacement ship when they lost the SSUE charter? There certainly have been others available which they could have chartered if they didn't want to buy although I have a could of thoughts why they wouldn't want the SSUE back, first being steam power followed by steam power and ending with steam power. (cost to operate, cost to insure and environmental regulations in AK)

If I were them and really wanted to get back into the game, I'd go to Japan and take a good look at the ORIENT VENUS. The price is certainly right for such a young vessel and to me she fits their product quite well.

I don't believe that World Explorer's product requires more than a 3:1 Pax/Crew ratio but even if it did, I am certain that additional crew berthing could be added.

The Blohm and Voss built former ROC high speed vessels OLYMPIA VOYAGER (ex OLYMPIC VOYAGER) will go to Iberojet for Spanish cruise service and OLYMPIA EXPLORER (ex OLYMPIC EXPLORER) will sail for Pittsburgh-based Semester-At-Sea, replacing current ship, the historic SS UNIVERSE EXPLORER (ex BRASIL, VOLENDAM, etc), which will likely follow her former sister NEW ORLEANS (ex ARGENTINA, VEENDAM, ENCHANTED ISLE, etc) to Alang.
