That's the caption I was waiting for. I would have posted something similar, but had not figured out the best way to phrase it. Well done, Malcolm!

MIAMI, Fla. - In a further cost-cutting move, Royal Caribbean International (RCI) today unveiled a new navigational system which will allow the entire fleet of five Voyager-class ships to be controlled from the bridge of the flagship Mariner of the Seas. The new system, which RCI described as little more than a software upgrade, allows Mariner to continually broadcast her position to receivers aboard the other four ships, which maintain a close formation on Mariner by means of their existing global positioning and autopilot systems.

"The savings from this make giving the cabin stewards more rooms to clean and charging for Johnny Rockets look like childsplay," said bubbly RCI spokesperson Shirley Seapass. "We were able to tell the captains and the entire bridge crews of Voyager, Adventure, Explorer, and Navigator to 'Get out there' and find new jobs." Asked about any downside to the new technology, Ms Seapass said, "Well, it means all five ships have to follow a single itinerary. But we think the guests will get used to it. After all, they've swallowed nearly everything we've thrown at them the past few years," she giggled.

For now, RCI will use cardboard cutouts in place of the four missing captains at the captain's receptions. "The cutouts are life-sized, and you can't really tell the difference in your pictures taken with the "Captain," remarked Ms Seapass. Shipboard photographers have been instructed to keep the camera directly in front of the cutout so as not to spoil the illusion.

In the future, RCI plans to replace the cutouts with holographic projections of the remaining captain. However, this new technology will be tried first with the cruise directors. "They kind of seem all the same anymore, anyway," said Ms Seapass. If that is successful, stage and ice performers will be next in an effort to reduce costs and standardize entertainment across the line. In a more ambitious plan, RCI hopes to replace wait staff and cleaning crew with holograms. Said Ms Seapass, "The trick will be to train the guest to accept a holographic "crew member" who smiles, nods, and goes through the motions, while the guest actually serves himself and cleans up. But we're working on it."

Landlocked Cruiser:

Does Ms. Seapass think they will use advanced holograms like the Doctor on Star Trek Voyager, or cheapies with "H"'s on their foreheads like Arnold Rimmer on Red Dwarf?

Brian--

I called my RCI contact Bernie Beancounter, who is a little closer to this decision. He said he cannot answer directly, since the choice of holography vendors is a closely guarded secret. However, he did say he has seen the cardboard cutouts, and THEY have "H"'s on their foreheads, so draw your own conclusion.
