Delayed arrival of Cruise P409
Released: 25 Mar 2004

Travel agents who have passengers travelling on Pacific Sky cruise P409, which departed Sydney on Monday 15 March, kindly note that due to inclement weather conditions as a result of Cyclone Grace, the arrival of Pacific Sky into Sydney has been delayed until Saturday 27 March. Disembarkation will commence at 8:00am at Darling Harbour Wharf 8.

Passengers who booked air with P&O cruises have had their flights rebooked. P&O cruises are also assisting passengers who made their own air arrangements in rebooking their flights.

As the press releases above show, Pacific Sky was a day late into Sydney supposedly due to cyclone Grace which was up off the far north queensland coast.... However i fail to see how the cyclone which was well away from the ships route could have caused a 24 hour delay?

Sure the sea conditions could have been rough, however Pacific Sky is no slow ship and has handled horrific conditions off Sydney before.... How could it be so delayed?

Even worse than just a delay for P&O is the fact that the cruise terminal was hosting a charity function on Saturday (as pac sky was due on friday) and so it wasnt even available for use, they had to set up marquees in the carpark i guess to process the passengers!

Not only this but the next cruise just happened to be a 3 night weekend cruise, instead of the usual 9 night or longer cruises pac sky does, so losing 24 hours was almost like losing half the cruise for the passengers embarking!

Interestingly P&O stated they are even assisting passengers with air not arranged through them, a bit of a different tune to Star Cruises who provided no assistance to passengers after they cancelled a Leo cruise also due to a cyclone...
see thread here

Would have been nice for the passengers already aboard at least, getting an extra night free! WIll be interesting to hear how P&O handled the whole thing anyway as i believe our cruisetalker claudio was aboard the weekend voyage. I saw the ship sailing off the coast of Sydney last night around 5.30pm heading in a more southerly route than usual, perhaps to avoid the sea conditions from grace.... I look forward to hearing all about it when your back claudio!
