I've always thought that the Diamond/Sapphire look much better than the Grand/Golden/Star. In addition, I think I am the only one in the world who actually LIKES the pods!

She is absolutely fabulous..
Not only the best of the Grand-class, but the better 100k tonners too!
Look at this Italian bow, recalling Galileo, Oceanic, Eugenio..and you can safely walk aroud it!
Very clever of the designers to allow passengers to walk around the bows, imagine watching Dolphins?
Anybody went there with a camera?
Good thing the "Ferrari","FIAT", "Trolley cart handle" is a thing of the past...Hope the earlier ships will be retrofitted!

It's not quite a thing of the past. CARIBBEAN PRINCESS and CARIBBEAN PRINCESS 2 will both still have the shopping cart handle for some inscrutable reason.

I prefer the DIAMOND and SAPPHIRE over the Grand-class ships....If only they take away the hidious funnel, its perfect compared to the other GRAND-class designs...

CARNIVAL DESTINY is by far the best 100k plus cruise ship. Her near sisters are slightly less good looking with that extra deck. 2nd best looking is the Voyager class. I find all GRAND and DIAMOND class vessels to be the ugliest cruise ships EVER built...

Of course there is also a rather good looking 150k liner, but we've already discussed that enough I think

I agree with you. I think all of the Grand Class ships are hideous. The bow, far from being like that of Oceanic, is stubby and bloated. Having sailed on an inaugural cruise on Golden, I couldn't believe how poor the standard of finish was - peeling decks, rust, cheap deck surfaces and a decor that gives a new dimension to the word bland. Compare her build quality with that of Meyer-Werft or Chantiers and it is quite shocking.

In my opinion, QM2 is easily the best looking 100K+ shipe ever built.

From the angle of the photo. it looks absolutely square! Compare that with the long lean lines of the great ships of the past, "France," "Leonardo," others.

Ugly, ugly!

CGT, yes you may be the only person in the world who likes those pods, lol.

But I am probably one of the few who actually LIKES the Shopping Cart handle. I think it adds a balance to the very wide and attractive bridge. Plus, if you've ever been on a prior Grand sister, the view and atmosphere is awesome up there.

I am sailing Caribbean Princess in May and very happy she has her Formula 1 spoiler.

My granmother used to say "do not mix coconut and apricots".
I think the Grand class and superior japanese cousins can only be compared to ships built since 1997, when the Carnival Dynasty came around.
Grant it, Eugenio and Oceanic are not comparable.
What I meant is that the bow curves like the one of Oceanic, Galileo when seen from the profile.
There might be some finish problems, which justify the FIAT nickname, but the ships are evolving in a nice way.
I love these futuristic turbines on top of the funnels.
We are in the 21st Century, and it is time to look ahead, not behind.
Is there a ship on which one can walk around the bows at sea?
Does anyone fancy Farcusian vertigo?
Hoew about being spied from above in the RCCL Disney style walking street?
The Grand is so far the best and getting better, but it takes many to make a world!

That's funny because I think ALL Carnival ships are compelely fugly (yes, fugly, that's not a typo) espeically their ugly looking winged funnels.

While not a big fan of the Destiny class, I am less of a fan of Princess' ship....especially this one.

It's just gross.

The best design I've seen for a 100,000+ ton ship, apart from QM2, was the SuperStar Sagittarius II intended for Star Cruises but never built.

That ship, to be built by Meyer Werft, looked to have sleek lines (missing from Voyager-class), unity of design (missing from Grand-class), and some elegance (missing from Destiny-class).

I wonder if they will ever resurrect that design for NCL? Not likely anytime soon.

I would not say it is the ugliest ship ever, The Grand Princess is far less attractive with that hideous stern and sky walk. The prize for ugliest in my opinion are the newbuilds of MSC. Their "beak like" excuse for a bow and really square superstructure in my opinion is the worst (a shoebox with a bow). Talk about trying to spend as little money as possible in creating a nice design! Remember, new cruiseships are built from the inside out. To hell with a lovely profile, it is all about maximum interiors space. The days of really beautiful ships are over. The QM2 at least trys to show a nice profile, but almost every ship built is the last 15-20 years had been hard on the eyes.

I think the Carnival funnel design is great. it's about the best funnel design I've seen in the past twenty years. I bet you didn't like the FRANCE/NORWAY's funnels then either?

Totally agree! IMO, Meyer Werft builds the best looking ships!

No, the French Line pulled it off and did it right.

The thread topic reads, "She doesn't look half-bad from this angle (Diamond)." Like many, I was very critical of Diamond's looks on an earlier thread that featured a head-on bow shot. She looks a bit better from nearly any other angle, although I am still no fan.

Disney's ships, on the other hand, are two that I generally like the looks of. But if I had to judge her from this shot alone, I'd think Disney Magic the "fugliest" cruise ship of all:

Actually yeah, MSC's new ships are pretty lame but Festival had one that I saw that was even worse, EUROPEAN STARS I think, or maybe it was VISION, I can't remember. A big box, basically.
