Lei will decorate Pride of Aloha hull
20/01/2004
A flower lei in vibrant yellows, pinks and greens will decorate the hull of NCL America’s Pride of Aloha, which begins service in Hawaii on July 4. The ship, currently Norwegian Sky, will undergo a conversion and reflag to US registry to assume the Pride of America’s previously published program.
Created by Honolulu artist and designer Linda Umstead, the lei design was the winner in an NCL competition. Umstead will receive a $10,000 cash award and a cruise for two aboard Pride of Aloha

Looks cool!!!

Don’t like Pride of America’s hull art much, looks too much like a hotrod and with that ship design no wavy lines could make it look fast.

But Pride of Aloha looks super, wacky enough an colourful enough to actually work!

However I do wonder how they will maintain these ever getting more complicated hull arts? Are the “paint” crewmembers send to art school now?

Best, Onno

Onno, I agree with you, Pride of Aloha is beautiful. But Pride of America is a grotesque spectacle. The Tanya Harding of cruise ships.

Very pretty, I would have maybe placed another lei painting just around the Il Adagio dining room windows area because it looks sort of empty back there...

And I wish NCL would get rid of that 'Freestyle Cruising' banner-style logo off the hull of their ships. Tacky.

I like it too....much better than PoA. And, Onno, I was thinking the same thing....I feel sorry for the touch up crew.

"The Tanya Harding of cruise ships."

Thanks, Scott, that made my day.

It won't be long before the entire NCL fleet has hull art... I would expect the two new Star-class ships from Meyer Werft will also have art.

Like it or not, the art is becoming a brand identity for NCL... a very smart idea.

NCL's hull art...a smart idea? I totally agree! Something has to differentiate them from all the other white-hulled plain janes out there.

And as long as it is done tastefully it will look brilliant, but I agree that the Pride of America's hull art looks awful in the artists renditions. MAYBE it will look better in real life???

Very artistic design.
This german-built beauty will distinguished itself even more from the other bland cruiseships she competes with!
Hope Costa applies a similar livery scheme on half-sister Costa Victoria!

Oh no... She deserves to be white and unadorned, like every Costa passenger ship, ever... Hull decoration wouldn't fit with her Italian moderne interiors !

If you go to www.ncl.com it seems like they extended the hull art a little bit longer....does look much better as it doesnt stop mid-ship now...
