On every RCCL cruise I go on, every day there is listed on the cruise compass a time for "Friends of Bill W. meeting". What on earth is it. I even looked up some of my old compasses and they are even listed in 1993!

Those are A.A. meetings, Alcoholics Anonymous.

If you see "Friends of Dorothy", those are mixers for gay passengers.

RCCL has AA meetings? I've never heard about that before - is it some sort of secret?

Dr. Bob Smith & Bill Wilson were the two founders of Alcoholic's Anonymous in Akron in 1935.

"Friends of Bill W" is just a code for announcing a meeting and which you will find on nearly all cruiseships these days.

Most ships I have cruied on have had meetings for the 'freinds of Bill W". At first I thought that Bill W was a very well travelled man!

I wonder why they do not have Gamblers Anonymous meetings, too?

I always wondered about that too. I finally asked someone and they said it was AA meetings. I am not a friend of Bill W and would not fit in to the party with a beer in my hand most waking moments while on a cruise.

good one,

I give full support and not pass judgement to those who work on their addictions which in the case of chemicals is really a health problem not a character flaw.
