Not in operation for quite a long time, the Omar III (ex-Sun Viking) is sailing now. Here are some interior photos taken onboard.

Surprisingly, some facilities onboard are more advance than SuperStar Leo, e.g. LCD/plasma TV in some cabins, computer screens used on gambling tables... all in all, the refit was well done, especially for some public areas like restaurant and nightclub. She will kickstart cruises between HK and Shantou as well.

Thanks for the link. We sailed on Sun Viking many years ago to Asia so it is nice to see she is still being taken care of. While a tiny ship she certainly has a lot of character.

Thanks for the link GXD. I like how she loks. By the way, does anyone have any interior pictures of her as the SUN VIKING in her last days for RCI? Thanks in advance.

As for the new photos, I find them fascinating, and actually think that internally she doesn't look bad at all. On the other hand the exterior, with the funnel "decoration", is horrible.

Incidentally I was just looking at this picture:

Does anyone else see the faint design on the wall in between the orange-ish (wood toned?) cabin doors? It looks like the cabin numbers are there, and the decoration seems to be in the shape of an archway or door.

I find this to be an interesting, rather unique design feature. Does anyone know if this is some sort of wall covering or are these embossed wall panels, rather like the cabin doors themselves on many newer ships? Is it an original '70s touch (certainly looks like it could be) or part of the new Asian decor?

It seems like her dining room chairs are still there from RCI days! Compare to the link Cruiseny gave.

To be honest, I don' t think that is a unique design on the walls. When I was on Carousel in 98 all along the corridors were large circular pictures of the Nordic Prince, Song of Norway and Sun Viking in romantic Carribean settings. I assume these patterns on the wall are marks from when they were removed.

Yep, those aren't designs, but rather, marks left by the hideous circular photos RCI put up as original ship artwork. They were all shots from the '70s, many of which were typical 'Royal Caribbean' destination shots featuring lots of sun and sand. Each one was covered by a large plastic disc to protect it. When we sailed on Sun Viking in 1996 the photos were faded and tacky, including many with water stains. It's too bad they couldn't do a better cover-up job of the screw holes and discoloring.

Nice pictures, the array around the funnel which is carrying the logo looks a bit strange, like if the funnel is still under construction. Interesting combination those classical looking chairs in the Mahjong room!

Best, Onno

Well that explains those oval areas, a simpler explanation than I could have imagined... But there are also other decorations (?) further down the corridor that perplex me... In this photo I've outlined them in red (I hope Gundam X Divider doesn't mind):

Once you know where to look, it is actually easier to see the area I'm talking about in the original image above.

This looks like some kind of door, but I don't think it can be, because on the left side of the corridor it is covered over by a railing which would mean that any door could not be opened.

Anyone know what this is? Is it also the remnant of some kind of wall hanging?

They must be service doors for the bathrooms. I can't think of any other explanation. Perhaps they only open above the railing, or perhaps the railing has to be removed first before servicing. Also, it is possible that the railings are not original but instead installed at a later date due to safety regulations.

The Omar III is sailing under "Asia Cruiser Club", or "Asia Cruises" in some of their posters. That is actually owned by Stanley Ho, and you can just refer as a casino ship.

Yes, Royal Caribbean logos are still everywhere onboard! Refit was done quite well, but not very thoroughly.

I will check the layout of the ship later and see if I can make sure the location of the mahjong room. And which bar do you mean? Do you mean the one appears to be red? It is inside the nightclub.

Indeed the cabin plumbing service doors are BEHIND the corridor railings. The railings are easily removed with something like a very large 'allen' wrench.

When those circular photos were new to the ship, they were very 'chic'! A porthole view to distant locales, as it were.

Yes, they are plumbing service doors - I seem to recall them being open often enough on Carousel. Very nice to see those pictures - brings back nice memories a good cruise on Sun Viking's twin.

I wonder what mr Fain will think of his little baby?
When I was transferred from Sovereign of the Seas to Sun Viking, I learnt to appreciate a quiet vessel.
Until then, engine noises were covered by 2600 screaming and running passegers!
The boat deck and the Star lounge were my favorite places.
Amazing Star lounge still survives, but rather bland in design.
Gone are the 70's oranges, and stylish table lamps in the restaurant window table.
I wonder if the portholes looking into the pool are still there.
Love the cabins, simple, but functional.
Hope cold seafood buffets are now spiced up !
ssLewis, missing the Viking

Hi Everyone,

I am truly fascinated by these photos. I sailed Song of Norway and Nordic Prince in my early cruising days. Song of Norway is the ship that got me into cruising and was my first experience. From those days, I so wanted to sail Sun Viking but never was able to. From what I have seen, though, she was strikingly similar in terms of décor but just had a smaller hull.

The cabin corridor photo is particularly interesting. A few things that I notice right away : The removal of the "porthole" photos that featured couples on beaches, snorkelers, fish, you name it! Another is the interesting design at the end of the corridors. I am surprised that it is still there given the fact that that was one of those 70's style prints that did not seem to really depict anything. A corridor speaker has also be added as a retrofit. This is believable given that I remember the original corridor speakers were a bit "fuzzy" even on my last Nordic Prince cruise in 1995.

The cabin doors look the same save for the fact that they have upgraded the hardware to read cards versus the "actual keys" that were used on both of my sailings.

All in all, though, it is sad to see that she has departed from the "good 'ole classic" days of Caribbean cruising but I do feel happy that she is still in use, sailing, and being enjoyed.

I will always consider these original ships to be my idea of classic cruising (well outside of the actual classic liners) - but at least for me ...

Have a Great Day!

If memory serves those images were of old viking ship hulls from head-on. Very apropos if you ask me.
