I know. I was a little surprised too . Now its off to opera-like music...I like the fireworks. I thought the Queen's podium time was very short. Maybe its just me because it is my first time seeing a christianing ceremony.

Image quality is a little weak, only 34Kbps, would be nice if the video was a little more robust.

Both FNC and CNN did a short cut-in, guess an Amber Alert in GA is bigger news for the non-boaties out there.

I had CNN on and kept looking over my shoulder but missed the cut in. Oh well.

I agree I wish BBC would stream higher quality video, but hey, it's better than nothing! We got to see it!

And I just loved that "Stars Aboard" video segment...

*sigh* between that and the Movietone news...I eat stuff like that up...

No problem, I'm just glad I found it!

Watch the BBC World News tonight (on BBC America or BBC Canada or your local PBS station in the U.S.) to see footage from the ceremony....I'm sure they will show it, no doubt.

I've been lucky enough to attend two live christening ceremonies. The first with the late great Audrey Hepburn and STAR PRINCESS in Ft. Lauderdale. I was working for Princess LA at the time. The other was with the beautiful Sophia Loren in New York and CROWN PRINCESS. I was a Purser onboard. Both ceremonies were magnificent, maybe a bit more so then QM2's but then I can understand things being a bit understated with the Queen in attendance. Anyway, in both cases the actual christening (or podium time) was very short. Only a few words and the smashing of the bottle. It's all the other fun stuff which takes up the majority of the time.

CROWN PRINCESS especially was memorable, as Sophia Loren arrived in a horse drawn carriage accompanied by Lord Sterling on a sunny Brooklyn afternoon. All the crew (we Officer's were standing on the bow section) lined the open decks to watch the event. We spent six star filled nights in NY sailing on NY Skyline overnight cruises and hosting several balls..... including the Princess Grace foundation which was truly a star studded affair. Great memories!

How long did they cut in for, and what exactly did they exactly show? The Queen pushing the button I suspect...

And by the way, did anyone notice? The Queen didn't look or sound very enthusiastic, it was like she was just doing it because she had to, and when they gave three cheers for the Queen, even the audience sounded a bit weak..

Yes I did notice that, but I think that is just the Queen. You know, show no emotion.... just another day being a "Royal" I guess.

What I noticed about the three cheers were the different accents. Hip Hip Hooray (as we American's say), and Hip Hip Hoorah (as I suppose the Brits pronounce it).

I heard that one as well Ernie,

Soundtrack music is probably the cheapest music to borrow for something, Cunard could have simply asked John Williams to compose a special QM2 music piece for the ceremony (like he did for the Olympics) that would have been something and Cunard would have had another collectors piece (a single CD) to sell aboard QM2 as souvenirs.

Come on Cunard PR team get of your lazy….. and be creative!

Best, Onno

Well yes, but I think she sounded more enthusiastic when she named QE2.

Eh, she was younger then. Now she is a bit jaded. Name one ship you've named the all!

LOL

But seriously, I just thought she wasn't into it, what with the ship being American owned and French built, and she didn't really care...

You know, even though I dislike Frank Sinatra, I also really happen to love Bossa Nova, and I really liked how they picked the Sinatra/Jobim version of "Baubles, Bangles and Beads", during the "Stars Aboard" segment, as parts of the song could really be referring to the QM2 herself...

Baubles, bangles, bright shiny beads
Sparkles, spangles, her heart will sing, singa-linga
Wearing baubles, bangles and beads

She'll glitter and gleam so
Make somebody dream so...

Hello all.

I was delighted to watch the QM2 officially named even if it had none of the drama of the launch of QE2 - oh well I suppose times change!

My best launch was Royal Princess in November 1984 when Princess kindly invited all the maiden voyage passengers to see the naming - and that is when Princess Diana spoke with me....

Let's all wish Queen Mary 2 a long and successful career.

Mike
