Here is a link to more coverage of the QM2 from the BBC. Note the small picture of the hall with those gold Normandie like bas reliefs. I'm now calling it the "Normandie Hall", I want to get in there soooo bad....

What's interesting (...or possibly disturbing) is that when you do a query for "Quenn Mary" with Google, you get 279 matches.

What I find possibly disturbing is that in the center of the Life Ring photo, there is a picture symbol of a life ring so that you'll know that your actually looking at a life ring

What I find disturbing is that Cunard has not seen fit as of yet to correct the error! For shame!

Maybe they haven't noticed it yet. And where the heck is the "2"?

Some errors never get fixed. In 1977 I was assigned a cabin on QE2 forward of the A stairway on 2 deck. As was/is my usual practice after locating my cabin (and before the ship sailed) I did my own lifeboat drill which consisted of checking out the lifejacket, reading the instructions in the bathroom and then following the arrows to my muster station. The sign in my bathroom said I was assigned to boat station number 1 on the Boat Deck (starboard side). However, when I followed the arrows I found boat station number 1 was on the PORT side on the Upper deck...the station had been moved in 1972 but they hadn't changed the signs in the bathroom cabins. My cabin steward confirmed that all the cabins in that section of the ship were "mislabelled". I reported the discrepancy to the Bureau (what they called the Purser's office in those days).

Fast forward a few years to 1983. Boat station 1 was still located on the Port side on the Upper Deck and the cabin signs still directed the occupants to the BOAT Deck. I reported the discrepancy again. I would not be surprised if the error has still not been fixed.

Even more disturbing Joe, is that 1) you bothered to try it and 2) you thought that it was worth telling us about it!

(Off topic I know, but how is this for a very odd web sit Here)

One of the "Normandie panels" is described here by Seatrade Insider. I believe there are four all together. I like the part about Homer Simpson, and apparently you really have to look for it as it's somewhat hidden. This description is of the North America panel. I assume the other three have something to do with the other continents.

===============

In a central corridor, a large metallic art panel, ‘North America’ by Gonzales & Harris of the UK, depicts the Statue of Liberty, Native Americans, a baseball player and an American football player. Astute viewers will also notice a tiny etching of cartoon character Homer Simpson.

You might do best to view these pieces from afar. I personally don't mind Homer Simpson. Of course I am a Simpson's fan (and Futurama) and besides he is apparently quite hidden so you won't see him unless you really look. A little comic relief never hurt anyone, and besides, QM2 doesn't need to be 100% serious. I can do without the American football though. I have no idea what is depicted on the other three pieces, and for all we know it could be worse.

I must admit what I would have rather seen are four bronze art pieces saluting famous Cunard liners of the past.... maybe QE, QM, QE2, and CUNARD COUNTESS. Just kidding about that last one! The Green Goddess might be a better choice.

Thanks Pam. But I have to ask....did following the arrows actually lead you that spot on the ship? In 1977 and 1983 the sign also said Boat Deck but the arrows led to a station on Upper Deck.

Brian, yes the arrows led to the right place. So must have been updated. But a while ago, as there was a rather discoloured scrappy sticker stuck on the wall beneath the panel advising of the low level lighting to follow in an emeregency, which I would have guessed was installed years ago?

I came across a bit of info. on Bouwens paitnings in the lobby. From the Scotsman:-
"Also hanging in the Grand Lobby are two paintings by marine artist Gordon Bouwens, based at Killearn in Stirlingshire. He was approached to take part in the project after selling several prints via his website to a mysterious client named Steven Payne. "I didn?t know him from Adam, but he got in contact with me and said: ?By the way, I?m the chief naval architect for the QM2. If you would be interested, I will put your name forward to do the artist?s impression.? So I did a quick somersault and said: ?Yes, I think I might be interested?. After doing the official artist?s impression of the ship, I was commissioned to do the paintings."

Bouwens has been fascinated by ships all his life. Some of his earliest memories are of watching the steamers on the Clyde. He worked as a graphic artist for a marine engineering company, then for Strathclyde Council, quitting to run his own company, GB Marine Art, in 1997.

Through his art, he became friends with John Brown, one of the designers of the Queen Mary and the Queen Elizabeth, who died in 1999, a few months before his 100th birthday. "When he died, his niece gave me a 30/60-degree set square, which he?d used on drawings of the Queen Mary in the 1920s. I used it when making these drawings - it was a bit of an inspiration."

Nice story all round. Rest of article about a couple of others too, here.

Pam

Good! Thanks Pam. Judging by the photo it looks like they have changed all the signs, so maybe they are all correct now. The muster stations used to be numbered but now they seem to have a letter rather than a number. I would hazard a guess that the changes were made in the 1994 refit.
