Well this just finished airing, and it was a good segment, with the terms "ocean liner" and "crossing" used liberally throughout. Only mistake really was that it was said that the Carnival "Line" owns Cunard when it is actually the Carnival "Corporation".

Katie Couric made the mistake of referring to it as a "cruise ship" during the teaser. Also, I didn't think they did a very good job of showing the ship. Most external shots were of her sea trials and I would have liked to have seem more shots of the public spaces. I thought the piece jumped around too much.

That said, Cunard seems to be getting a lot of the publicity they were looking for.

Joe,
QM2 is a cruise ship, just as she is also liner. The ship was certainly built with a duel purpose, and in fact QM2 will cruise more then she will cross.

Frankly I have no problem calling her a cruise ship, and no doubt most of the public will call her just that. Of course there is a small group of very pronounced ocean liner fans that will call her nothing but a liner, and that is fine too.

Absolutely correct, it just seems that Cunard is going out of their way to refer to her first as an ocean liner. It's another way of differentiating her from the other ships on the market.

Will that be swords, or pistols at 20 paces?

Sorry! Couldn't resist.

P.S. to Malcolm O: I'm surprised that you missed this one.

Here's a link to some video from the Today Show:

QM2 on Today

My computer (a Mac running OS 10.3) won't display the video on any browser (I have tried Safari, IE, and Netscape to no avail). It keeps saying pop-up blocking software has prevented the video from being shown yet IE doesn't even have pop-up blocking software and neither does Netscape as far as I know. I also turned off the pop-up blocker on Safari but that did no good.

Anyway, I am assuming those of you using PCs will have more luck.

I tried the link. It also came up with a message about pop-up blocking software (which I do have) but gave a link to by-pass it. Even so, the viewer is a beta version for MSN and it completely froze my computer and would not respond. I would be careful about opening it. I'm running Windows XP.

I thought the first report was very good, especially since the reporter at least attempted to explain the difference between an ocean liner and cruise ship. Fast editing allowed many quick scenes of areas I would have liked to see more of.

I work at a CBS affiliate in the production department, and believe me, trying to get people in the newsroom to take ships in any kind of serious light is difficult. To the most AMERICAN media, who are very ignorant about things maritime, I'm just grateful they covered it.

Somehow, I feel people in the UK always get all the good stuff in their reporting. Whole specials produced about ships, while here it's just the same old dribble. Scott & Lacy Peterson, Politics - who cares, Britney Spears, and the usual parade of garbage.

FYI:

MSNBC had made all video on their website incompatible with Macs, purposely. This, despite the fact that Microsoft themselves made sure that the new Windows Media Player 9 for Mac would work with MSNBC embedded video and all other sites that have embedded Windows Media Video.

The changeover occured just a few weeks ago and just a few weeks after the new WMP 9 for Mac was released by Microsoft.

Right hand doesn't know what the left hand is doing!

Netscape 7.1 has a built-in pop-up blocker. However I couldn't get Netscape to show the clip even when I told the pop-up manager to allow pop-ups for the site. I also configured Netscape's cookie manager to allow cookies from the site, to no avail.

I had no problem with IE 6.0 but the message about pop-up blocking still appeared. I was still able to view the clip by clicking on the "here" link that accompanied the message. You might have to allow the required Codec to be installed on your pc to view the clip but it only takes a few seconds.

As for the clip, it's almost 7 minutes in length and can be watched full screen. I enjoyed it. It was nice to see the ageless Maureen Ryan is still going strong...a delightful lady, Maureen has now worked aboard all 4 of Cunard's Queens.

Brian

P.S. BTW, I am running Windows XP and have a DSL connection. I'll see if it runs on my Win 98 pc with IE 5.5

[ 01-06-2004: Message edited by: Brian_O ]

Follow Up: I can't run it on my Win 98 pc without first downloading WMP9 and IE6 so I won't bother. IE 6 messes up some of the other software on that pc, so I reverted to IE 5.5

I tried the link again and it worked! I think I had too much running on my computer the last time. This time I closed all windows.

Great report and certainly passed on the excitement of this amazing ship. I liked it much better then Mary Hart's report this evening.

Hmmm, I got the viewer while running IE 6.0, but it said I had problems with Explorer and I got kicked out. When I tried running Netscape 6.2, nothing happened...

CGT, thanks for that info on MSNBC. That explains why NO videos on their site have been working for me in recent days...

Oh well. I think the only major news network website other than MSNBC that still offers free video is Fox.

No, there is something better than Fox, better than MSNBC, better than CNN, with FREE news video:
