Hi gang!

I'm sailing on the ROTTERDAM on 2-12-04 and will be flying in the day before for obvious reasons. ANy recommendations for good Hotels that are close to the piers? I styed at Pier 66 in 2000 but am looking for other options.

Thanks!

If having a view over the harbour is important, the Marriott Marina is at the other end of the bridge from the Hyatt Pier 66. An OK property, but not nearly up to the standards of the Hyatt. Their is also a Best Western across the street from the Hyatt; clean and funtional but just a motel. On the same street I have stayed at Embassy Suites, but found the view not existant and the traffic noise none stop. The Sheratons on the beach are nice should you want some sand between your toes prior to boarding. As well as these hotels, I frequently stay along the beach strip just south of Lauderdale in Hollywood or even a little farther south. There is a Howard Johnsons, several Holiday Inns and many independants. You probably need a rental car to use these, as the taxi fare is expensive. All in all, the Hyatt Pier 66 is my favourite.

The Marriott Harbor Beach Resort is a good alternative. very upscale property with a "private" beach and excellent pool area and a good, yet inexpensive, restaurant. If you go, be sure to book a harbor or ocean view room. Some of the rooms are odd size and overlook HVAC equipment.

The Renaissance is also a good choice. Definitely not a resort hotel, but it is a confortable, well appointed hotel, keyed to the business traveler. Its Bistro is one of Ft Lauderdale's best restaurants.
There's also a Starbucks adjacent to the main lobby.

If you are looking for something different, check out the Sheraton Yankee Clipper. It's old but I thnk it has a bit of charm including a swimming pool that you can see into via huge windows behind the bar = very 1960's. It's on the beach and has a couple of pools. In the evening you have a great view of the ships leaving port. Here's a brief overview from a previous trip.

If you are looking for some place interesting to eat you might want to check out the Mai Kai Restaurant. I haven't been there but watched a show last night that rated it the #1 "Kitschy Place" in the U.S. (...not sure I agree with that though).

Joe - we went to the Mai Kai years ago - what a waste of money - once was enough. Drinks are so overpriced. Can't believe the place is still going.

Had a friend who used to live across the road from some of the dancers and she said she would look out the window in the morning and there would be their long hair pieces hanging out to dry on the balcony. Talk about phony! Those gals were no more Hawaiin than I am.

.deck chair We stayed at the Embassy Suites last year and didn't find we were bothered by any noise from the traffic. This week we are staying at the Marriott Springhill Suites near the Airport, so I will let you know what it is like when we return.
