Hi
The Lloyd Werft website has put more photos on their web page. A few show the Norway. The logo on the funnel at the moment is the regualr NCL one which is odd.

Still gets my vote as one of the ugliest ships ever...

I agree Joe. PRIDE OF AMERICA is going to be one ugly looking ship. I'm not sure I'll like the interiors either as I'm not into kitschy Americana decor.

Now how about that ship behind her? What a beauty!

The photo should be titled "Beauty and the Beast".

I should think that the workers on the POA are looking over at Norway and thinking, "Shouldn't we be over there working?".

How ironic,...the beautiful, long bow of Norway and the short stubby bow of the, wait a minute,....does the POA even have a bow?!

If you look closely the NCL logo is smaller and positioned to the upper left. I think they have yet to add the red wave/stripes that make up the NCL America logo... but room has been made to add them.

Look at this shot:

That is the most terrible looking, stubby, short bow I have ever seen... even worse than Viking Serenade's original bow. I don't understand why NCL did not change that part of the design. She cannot have good deep sea capablities with that shape.

The unpainted ship and her hull are completely covered in scaffolding covered with plastic sheeting. The rusty decks are unpainted and have no teak decking. And the balconies have not received the partitions nor any of the pool deck areas their resort style additions. I remember some folks saying how ugly the Queen Mary 2 was, her steel hull unpainted, now with her almost completely done they are singing a different tune. Lets sit back and let NCL finish the ship, then you can pass judgment.

Unfortunatly for POA, there is no amount of paint, teak, or gold plating that could hide that ugly thing, that not even a mother could love. Scrap it and start over.

POA is a classic example of what happens when profit is the driving force in ship design- untempered by aesthetics.

Push the foward superstructure as far to the bow as possible to fit as many cabins as possible. Same with the square aft- full of balconies. Use as few curves as possible, as they add cost to the ship's construction. Add conference centers to the upper decks to draw businesses, and avoid glass and open spaces which do not add revenue.

Many lines are doing things like this, not just NCL- but at least others are able to maintain some level of external attractiveness to their ships. Such a shame.

Ok all of you have to realize that NCL did not originally design this ship. It was originally American Classic Voyages. I think she is going to atleast look better than what she would have ended up like. They were too far into construction to go back and make the changes.

Even when I saw the initial renderings of Project America, I didn't like the bow design. Honestly, that's the only major hang up I have with the ship's profile. I like the funnel,...a lot.

One other thing I have a problem with, and it's not just on this ship, is the lifeboats being exposed to the elements. From a comfort level, I like having lifeboats inset into the hull,....it allows me to walk the promenade no matter what the weather. It's also a great place to catch a few Z's in the shade.

I understand that POA will look much better when she's finished,....that goes without saying. But, it's not going to change the length of the bow...and that's where, IMO, she falls short,....get it, falls short?......sorry.

The changes done by NCL should improve her appearance, though she is still not an impressive ship, because of her bow... Just see if she gets better after being painted.

She has about as much bow as the Raddison Diamond!

Maybe it not a bow at all! Perhaps it's a private verandah for the forward facing cabins/suites!

If you lay a cardboard milk carton on it side, pinch it open and poke holes all over it you would have a pretty good model.
Hey, they could always paint pictures and discriptions of missing children on the ships side.

They must have some pretty good plans at NCL if they are going to make this one easy on the eyes!

I hope they can pull it off!

I think NCL did a great job extenting the ship and making her porportions better. But looking at NCL's changes (conference center on the upper deck, new front superstructure), I have to go with ACL's designs.

I agree.

Sell it to Gillette. They'll know what to do with that monstrosity.

UGH!

It probably won't be long before these so-called designers extend these hideous apartment blocks to reach 100 feet ahead of the bow and abaft the stern.

Freighter travel, anyone?

Brian

that ship would look better if the bow wasn't so short. ship design has really gone down the toilet in the 42years sense the norway was built.Ship desighners are spending too much time trying to make todays cruiseships look like buildings instead of looking like ships look at the norway she looks the way an ocean going vessel should look.

Designers are trying to cram as much revenue earning space into a hull as possible. That's capitalism, trying to get the most out of your investment. The great liners were built like they were primarily to make money too, at the time their design was what was needed to maximise profit, fortunately in their case the result was visual candy.

Anyone with an interest in Project America should look up Robert Tillberg's original design proposal for the ship. It's a two-funneled "retro"liner. Not bad at all. It's featured in Bill Miller's "Passenger liners American style" and in Peter Quartermaine's "Building on the sea".

In case no one ever saw these or just needed a refresher, these are some interesting pictures of what the finished project would have looked like in model form http://www.maritimereplicas.com/projectamerica.htm ...check out the first picture of the model against the picture in the above post being pulled out of drydock where the angle of view are the same and you can get a better idea of what NCL's finished project will look like. Here too is another link of a model of the ship http://www.jobsinparadise.com/prod03.htm
