Actually, going completely against my grain, I quite like it. It's not dark gaudy colours. I have read a lot about the models, just hope they don't make anyone seasick seeing them like that! & hope they don't fall off

Well, frankly, it looks like just another Farcus ship... I don't see the ocean liners theme except for the atrium with those models though. Speaking of which, I don't think I like them... Looking at that photograph makes me dizzy!

On another note, Farcus says he will be giving a "new look" to CARNIVAL MIRACLE - could this mean that COSTA FORTUNA will go down as the last ship in pure Farcus "entertainment architecture" style?

I believe the pictures are of the Costa Atrium/Bar, the Michelangelo Restaurant 1965, and the Conte di Savoia Grand Bar 1932.

Just as I expected (and is also the case with PARADISE, another ship with a Farcus "ocean liner" theme), there is little that resembles the ocean liners of the past these lounges are themed after. Unfortunately, there is not even much of a hint that would remind one of these ocean liners.

The Conte di Savoia Grand Bar looks like any other Farcus bar you could find on any latter Carnival ship. The Michelangelo Restaurant seems to take it's theme from the artist (looking at the ceiling) rather than the ship. Maybe the banister posts should have been made to look like the funnel's of the Mike?

I love the atrium! I've always liked the "C" logo and of course all those fabulous ship models. If I ever sail on FORTUNA a model or two might go missing somehow during the night! Very original and clever.

I'm somewhat of a fan of Farcus anyway, and this is very much in keeping with his Carnival style of work. I personally like it, and frankly it does look toned down in comparison to ATLANTICA or her sister. I've said it a thousand times and I'll say it again..... Farcus is great for Carnival, but Costa should have used their own designers. I see very little "Italian" in the decor (what do you expect from a designer from Miami Beach?). It looks more Disney which is all about themeing. I LOVE it for Carnival, but I would have preferred something more Italian sheik like the ROMANTICA or CLASSICA or even VICTORIA interiors for the Costa newbuilds.

Of course these ships are designed to appeal to the mass-market, and I guess in that respect the European mass-market is no different than the American mass-market. It's my understanding the previous Farcus designed Costa ships have been selling out and are well received.

Carnival always wanted to get it's style of branding through the front door of Europe, and with Costa they have done just that. I've heard European's state "Carnival would never go over in Europe". Guess what, it is going over rather well, just under a different name.... Costa.

Ernie - looking forward to more FORTUNA pics, and I would certainly sail on her, but prefer the pics Pam just took of LIRICA.... more my style. Too bad MSC cheapens the product by charging for mundane items like room service and bridge tours. Leaves me with a bad taste.

I’m not a big fan if this type of interior, but that is just my taste so I won’t go into that. However those models are way cool but why are they all upside down?! Makes looking at them for hours such a painful event for your neck! If I ever go on Fortuna I’ll take my binoculars and take a good look at that Italia model.

Another thing I noticed is that the brackets in “C” Costa logo seam to have returned on the floor of the atrium. I kind of liked that as a visual touch to the logo and was a bit disappointed when it was deleted from the funnel C’s

Best, Onno

PS: I think the ocean liner theme is when you take a good look out side over the railing!

That is correct. I'm not sure just where these photos came from but cropped versions are on Costa's Italian web site.

I agree. The only space that is obviously liner-themed is the atrium. That's also the most attractive space IMHO... And I too love that "C" logo, complete with quotation marks which added a certain flair to their logo, which is gone now.

quote:

I agree with you completely... Of all the things about this ship, the least Italian is the design! After all she is Italian-built, Italian-flagged, catering to largely Italian passengers, and so on... But the decor looks more like Vegas than Genoa (BTW, does anyone else find it neat that this ship was built in Genoa which is also her port of registry, the primary port she operates out of, and the home office of her owners?).

quote:
I've heard European's state "Carnival would never go over in Europe".

And as much as they might like that to be, it just isn't the case. Carnival, I think, would go over well pretty much anywhere in the industrialized world.

I wonder why they have moved the lobby bar. On the Destiny/Triumph/Conquest class the bar is in front of the elevators, but it looks like they've moved it to the other side, in front of the mid-ship restaurant.

On DESTINY/TRIUMPH/VICTORY, the lobby bar is in front of the elevators. On the CONQUEST class it has been switched to the other side and is now in front of the lobby stairs. This is consistent with the design of the Spirit Class atriums, and I believe Carnival felt it made the lobby more spacious so the change was also incorporated into the Conquest Class (and FORTUNA/MAGICA as well).

They came directly from the Italian Costa website.... www.costa.it
You can click on the cropped photo you spoke of on the Costa site and it will download a zip-file of the full photograph.

Ernie - waiting for more!

COSTA FORTUNA's interiors looks more toned-down and brighter colors. I actually like it, but I have to agree that Farcus's work shoudl stay with Carnival. I think the design of the atrium is fabulous, especially the models upside down. Does anyone know how they aree arranged? It seems like the newer ships go in front, followed by former ships...

Personally I don't like the interiors of the Costa Fortuna...too colorful and glitzy...nothing to do with Italian Style. She's another Carnival ship with only a Costa funnel....
The only nice thing is the models of the Costa's ships...
Just a short observation about Cruiseny comments: Costa Fortuna was built near Genoa, she is registered there, but Genoa IS NOT her homeport. She will sail from Savona.... Another " nice " idea of the Carnival management I suppose.

Homeport is Genoa buth she sail frome Savona. This happend constantly. Look at the Holland America Line today, ships home port off Rotterdam but mostly sailing from Amsterdam ore foraign ports as the cruising in Europe.

And looking back to the past Cunard and White Star Line liners hat there homeport in Liverpool well some ships sail from Liverpool some bigger ships never visit there homeport. But sail frome Southampton. (QM1, QE1, Olympic, etc.)

Absolutely true....
Not so many year ago most cruise ships were registered at Monrovia ( Liberia ) but I'm sure that none of them has visited this Country ( due to the Civil War ).
Costa headquarters are based in Genoa so it was quite ridicolous to create a new cruise terminal at Savona.... no reasons...money apart... for the company to not sail from Genoa...
I imagine what will happen if Cunard will base QM2 year round at Fort Lauderdale.... for example.

I think Genoa deserve it! Costa asked to operate a terminal, but Genoa didn't accept their proposal. Genoa has got two (three next year) cruise terminals and considering the amount of Costa ships which were calling at the port they could have given them a terminal (maybe Ponte Andrea Doria which needs urgent works to be done). Of course when Savona offered Costa the terminal they couldn't refuse it. Also most of the shops in Genoa are closed on Sundays and Costa's passengers complained a lot.

I forgot to say that a ship cannot be registered in Savona since this city in not one of the 13 Italian Maritime Administrative Department (like Genoa, Naples or Venice).

I think the interiors are absolutely disgusting. What a shame that Carnival had to let loose Fartass on Costa, rather than have the interiors designed by some of the people that did the early 90s Costa ships. Very sad Like the exterior of the ship, though...

This ship looks wonderful!! I really want to cruise with her next spring. These first images give a good impression. Is the good old Costa Riviera also upside down on the ceiling? Which ships are all there btw? All the Costa ships of the past?

Nice emerald colors, but those upside down models are not me really.
On m/v Jibilee, the ceiling was cleverly covered with a stained glass representing Normandie and Queen Mary passing each others at sea, seen from the top. It worked well, and the walls of Admiral's lounge had alcoves that had a model of the Blue Ribband liners.
Anymore pictures of the interiors?
Perhpas one of the lounge have slendid placemats with pictures of the Costa ships?
ssLewis, loving the exterior too

The world of Farcus may work on Carnival but, not on Costa.

There's nothing Italian about this at all. And while the models are cool, to have them hanging upside down is ridiculous.....

Oh, and the dining room,...yuk. Cool ceiling and light fixtures but those hideous handrail stanchions have got to go.

The lounge, while not Italian looking, is at least somewhat pretty.
