Pride of America to salute S.S. America
15/10/2003

NCL America will salute the 1940 ocean liner S.S. America of United States Lines by naming its library on the new Pride of America the S.S. America Library, featuring memorabilia and artifacts from the historic ship. The US-flag Pride of America will be christened in Hawaii on July 4 and sail year-round in the islands.
Ship historian Bill Lee is helping NCL America develop the library, which will display maps, oil paintings, an S.S. America model, photographs and memorabilia including crockery, cutlery and menus. A sign for the library is being created from a piece of her original teak deck donated by Steven Tacey, who immigrated to Australia on the vessel.

The S.S. America was christened by first lady Eleanor Roosevelt but entry into transatlantic service was delayed by the advent of World War II. The liner carried passengers in the Caribbean before serving as a troop ship, renamed the USS West Point (AP 23). Post-war, the S.S. America entered transatlantic passenger service.

In 1964, she was sold to Chandris and transported emigrants from England to Australia as the RHMS Australis. Taken out of service in 1969, she languished in Greece for 15 years before heading to Thailand under tow to become a floating hotel. In a storm off the Canary Islands, the towline snapped and S.S. America drove aground on Fuerteventura Island in January 1994, where she remains.

Either 1969 is a typo or seatrade insider (SI) didn't research this very well. Even if SI meant 1979, it really glosses over much of Australis's sucessful career, her short and disasterous post-Chandris career as S.S. America and her repurchase at puiblic auction by Chandris.

The America was the most beautiful Yankee liner ever built.

I know everyone loves the BIG U, but the America was so graceful looking. The BIG U is an impressive-looking ship, no doubt, but her older, smaller consort was the greater beauty, inside and out.
