I have just returned from the Orient Lines cruise from Piraeus to Baltimore. This was originally entitled ' Farewell Voyage of the Crown Odyssey' and I booked it as such because I wanted to have travelled on the ship before she went back to NCL. However, I was not successful in doing so as the name was changed to Norwegian Crown in February and when I boarded work was continuing to remove any trace of association with Orient Lines. On my cruise contractors had large numbers of workmen aboard. Half way through the cruise the indoor swimming pool, spa and gym on Deck 1 were closed and work started noisily on the installation of 21 crew cabins in their place. A new spa and gym were opened on Deck 10. On Deck 8 workmen were very busy converting part of the former Coronet Cinema into a 'Kids Center', 'Teen Club' and video games room. A group of European waitresses (mostly Rumanian) were brought aboad in preparation for the introduction of NCL's 'freestyle dining' when she started cruising for NCL on September 15; Previously the ship had all Filipino waiters. During my cruise 'NCL Freestyle' logos were affixed to the hull and all signs( such as the safety boards in the cabins) bearing the names Orient Lines or Crown Odyssey were replaced with similar signs but with the names 'NCL or Norwegian Crown.

Thanks anthonyvandyk. I thought the whole conversion was done during the drydock, but I am curious how the passengers thought about construction during their cruise? Too bad the indoor pool and spa on deck 1 will gone... From the pictures I saw, it looks so nice.

The vandals from NCL have really struck this time. It won't be long and another good crew and ship will have disappeared into the mists of time.

I agree! That indoor pool was fabulous. In fact, it was one of the few remaining traditional indoor pools afloat, not to mention it's on a relatively new ship which is extremely rare. When I say "traditional indoor pool", I mean one that is down in the bowels of the ship like the old liners had. Not a top deck pool with a glass dome over it.

What a shame! NCL could not find some place else to install crew cabins? I did not realize NCL increased the capacity so greatly that additional crew cabins had to be installed.

Why is it that NCL has a way of screwing up great things. Two incredible cruise lines, Royal Viking Line and Royal Cruise Line, are both victims of NCL's mismanagement.

Ernie - who has little respect for NCL.

Keitaro

Indeed the passengers were very unhappy and many talked about seeking compensation from NCL.

Ernie - you are so right. I spent many an hour at the indoor pool. A perfect place to relax when the ship was in port and the weather outside was bad. Remember the juice bar next to the pool? Very refreshing after using the sauna.

Also the Movie theatre was a true movie theatre and a great place to watch almost first run films. Most ships now use those crappy video projectors and show films in their show lounge.

The Crown, while small by todays standards, was really a first class cruise ship with many quiet places to relax and no art auctions, and loud bands on deck by the outdoor pool.

It's a shame.

For those that are curious what the indoor pool looked like, here is a good shot taken by the Meyer Werft shipyard, builders of this fine ship.

Here's a shot of her outdoor pool on the stern. The 2 windows you see on the ninth deck were the only two outside cabins facing the stern. On my last cruise on her I was in the one on the right or port side.

Unfortunately, it is not unknow for cruise lines to undertake major work during a cruise. Do seek compensation - it's your right!

anthonyvandyk, did you take any pictures of the ship? It would be interesting to see how the aft decks look and the interior changes. Thanks for sharing.

Now, about the indoor pool? It seems like it has been very popular to those who have been on CROWN numerous times. How come NCL has to get rid of it? I am sure there are other places that they could add crew cabins...

NCL already has indoor pools on the Norwegian Star and Dawn. They could cruise on them.
