I've been on two cruises which took in November 11.

On one, the date passed un-noticed.

On the other, Sunbird, there was a particularly moving Armistice Day service in the Oklahoma lounge. The captain and officers -- plus representatives of all departments from the cleaners to the cabin stewards to the bar staff -- in their No1 uniforms, and so many passengers it was standing room only.

The whole thing lasted no more than 15 minutes, including the Words Of Remembrance and "For those in peril on the sea".

And during The Silence at 11am, begun and ended with the ship's whistle, you could have heard a pin drop.

If any Cruise Talkers will be cruising through November 11, do let us know if Remembrance Day is remembered...

On a similar subject, it will be September 11th next week. I assume that will be fresher in cruise ship Captain's memories?

Long standing CruiseTalkers will recall that I was onboard the SS Norway on September 11th, 2001, crossing the Atlantic.

Who would have guessed that the SS Norway would have experienced a tragedy and be laid up two years later?

My wife and I were on the GOLDEN PRINCESS on 9/11 last year, second day from Punta Delgado to New York, the end of a 15 day Venice to New York, in the middle of a phase 8, and the ceremony was "standing room only" in the 1000 + theatre! Very well done by the Captain and staff!

The topic concerning our paying respects to issues and events is a sorry one. If for example certain politicians had studied the history of the Mesopotamian culture, they would soon learn that trying to control countries by force has never resolved anything.

Ho chi mihn got it right when he said, Let them send their armies. We shall just wait for them to become exhausted and go home.

My naive point is not to give rise to these crusades, great wars and jihads.

With no wars to remember and with older ones gone into deep history, maybe we can have celebration days for great and construcive events.

Possibly we should only allow women to be tomorrows rulers. I doubt that going face to face with Main Battle Tanks and Nuclear Carriers will ever be considered a viable option when that happens.

I intend no slight to Sread and his comments on Sunbirds ceremonies. I just wish we could get off this inane 'make war' mentality. Possibly if this occurs, Arison can convert The Eisenhower into a real megaship with real airplanes and dummy bombs. The possibilities are endless.

Topgun said: Possibly we should only allow women to be tomorrows rulers. I'm inclined to agree ... disputes could be settled with handbags at dawn!

Topgun also said: I just wish we could get off this inane 'make war' mentality. I also agree, whole-heartedly. But the two issues, 'make war' and 'remembrance', are separate.

At sea, while we're swanning around in our luxury ships sipping cocktails, it's especially vital to remember those who battled across the North Atlantic and made it all possible.

PS No slight taken, Topgun -- we've been shipmates too long!
