I returned Monday evening from a wonderful cruise to Alaska on the Volendam. Ship was in tip-top shape and completely full. Met a lot of nice passengers, many from Canada also.

Thanks to everyone who suggested the White Pass Trail excursion. We had a beautiful, very warm day in Skagway and the trip was spectacular. Rained all day in Juneau and again in the morning in Ketchikan but that didn't stop anyone from shopping, excursions, etc.

We were under a health alert when we boarded in Vancouver and consequently because of all the precautions taken no one came down with the Virus, thank goodness. There was no self-service in any of the eating areas, including helping yourself to water, tea, coffee, etc. No salt and pepper shakers on the tables, magazines, newspapers, paperbacks, books and games were removed from the library and if you wanted plastic gloves in the Casino they were available. Sanitized wipes were available everywhere and we were told to wash our hands constantly. It certainly paid off taking these precautions.

Our last day at sea was sailing the Inner Passage and late in the afternoon we saw many pods of Orkas. In Glacier Bay there were no big ice flows so we didn't see any seals, but saw a lot of Puffins.

This was a great trip and I would do it again.

Lucky girl, I love cruising Alaska and I always wondered about September sailings. When we cruised it was summer. The cruise was great but we got so much fog, we only saw the inside of the ship. It was like a cruise to nowhere.

Good to see you posting again, Justine.

We did have a bit of fog early one evening, but it disappeared as quickly as it had arrived.

On the last day sailing the Inside Passage, we ran into fog 2 times and you could hear the fog horns blowing. What an errie sound. As before, it disappeared very quickly. The Captain announced that we had fog because the water and air tempertures were the same.

I had an e-mail from the Volendam yesterday and they said they had another glorious day in Skagway, so I hope the weather holds for the next cruise, which will be the last for the Alaska season, except for a 12 day charter from San Fransisco.

Glad you had a wonderful time Sympatico, with good weather. The 'extra precautions' are something I expect we'll find the norm in future.
Love to see a pod of orca, got any nice photos? Only ever been 'whale watching' once and saw nothing only seen the odd one or two at sea, but a fair few in sea life centres. Must get to Alaska one day, too pricey from here

Pam - it is nearly impossible to get a photo of the Orcas, as they do not surface like the larger whales do. All you see for just a second if movement and then the white & black of their heads.

I didn't have my camera with me and even if I did, I found out later in the evening that the batteries were dead and my spare ones were also dead. I must be better prepared in the future.

I will send Joe a couple of the photos I took and he can post them.

Glad you had a great cruise. Maybe one of these days I will get to Alaska.

Thanks for mentioning the batteries. We leave in 3 weeks and I need to add this to the "To Do List".

Kevin - had a great time. Due to the stringent regulations on board, no one came down with the Norwalk Virus and everyone was fine.
