ncl is having the ss norway towed to a port unknown.
they have not lined up a contractor to repair the norway
as she is being towed.
i wonder if we will see the norway again?
having diesels installed would
take longer then 3 months i assume. how long did it take to
convert the qe2 from steam to
diesel?

As Tim stated earlier, I don't think it was any secret NORWAY was leaving this week.

This certainly was not privileged information or anything someone living in Miami and watching NORWAY could not discern.

Now if you are looking to impress us, confirm to us what exactly is going to be done to NORWAY, where she is going, and exactly when she will return to service!

True... But I was asked not to say anything "specific".

What we DO know is that NOBODY - not even the tug operator - knows where she's going.

I think you'll need a psycic for that .

For now, it *seems* her temporary destination is Land's End (GB) before NCL is still determining which European shipyard will do the job.

The trip with the SMIT ROTTERDAM (the tug) is planned to last about 3 weeks.

See NCL's today media statement for that.
(at least they don't stick their neck out with that destination and statement).

Just how reliable is that information?

I'm hanging on the edge regarding the great Lady right now and am very nervous.

From the NCL web site:

S/S Norway Media Statement

June 27, 2003 - This morning, at approximately 6:30 a.m., after extensive discussions with, and clearance from, the US Coast Guard in Miami, the S/S Norway left the Port of Miami on its way to Land's End at the western edge of the English Channel. A seagoing tugboat is towing the ship, with 85 of her crew onboard. The transatlantic crossing will take approximately three weeks.

Although the S/S Norway is being towed to Europe, NCL is still determining which shipyard will complete the repairs. She is on schedule to begin sailing again on October 5th, 2003.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the U.S. Coast Guard have now completed their on-site investigation although the NTSB has stated that it may take a year to determine the cause of the accident.

******************************************

Oh well, that certainly confirms that I was NOT on the final transatlantic!

Ship Cafe - the info is not very reliable at all. It would be tragic if it has some truth to it. I just can't believe that they will re-engine her. I would think that it would be a costly option and would that would require considerable logistics and planning - it s not just the turbines your replacing - it's gearing, fuel systems, uptakes, intakes shaft lines, propellers, control systems not to speak of any structure work (access and removal routes required), removal work and installtion as well as. This stuff isn't just sitting on a shelf waiting to be bought. No, I would be surprised if she is re-engined, at least in the time frame given especially given that no yard has been selected. She will probably have her boiler room and damaged
boiler(s) rebuilt - if she makes it.

Want to know more about Land's End?

I had better go to Land's End in a few weeks and get my Binoculars ready!

I'm glad the webcam is working. It looks like the weather is going to be good for her arrival to Lands End. That's a neat site Malcolm, thank you for posting it. If I'm right, SS NORWAY should be able to make it about the 18th of this month. That is assuming it will take the 3 weeks they say it will take her to get to the English Channel, barring no bad weather.

Malcolm you may be better off taking up residence on the White Cliffs, more chance of a glimpse.. or even get yourself a xchannel season ticket and plough back and forth for a week!

As well have few ship yards left, seeing her of the British coast is pretty unlikely!

Maybe I'd be better waiting in Germany?

Shiplovers!
I was reading the Evening Standard when I spotted this incredible offer!
Ring P&O and mention "New Ships".
You get a car+2 pax for only £10 for each day you spend within the 24 hour clock!
Of course, the offer is not applicable to any sailings, but some homework could get you a cheap boat to shoot Norway.
In my experience, she might pass the Strait of Dover at night.
If you just want to sit in luxury and watch the channel traffic, try Folkestone.
Near the arts center, several former glorious hotels offers commanding views of the channel for a bargain.
Why camp when you can enjoy a good English Breakfast!
Ahoy, mates,
sslewis, about to haunt the Kent cliffs

The Folkestone hotel belongs to the Best Western chain.
Saga cruises head quarters are there too.
Some good sightseeings spots are the Coastguard car parks.
One is at Fairlight Park, near Hastings.
Another is just before the first Dover Roundabout when coming from the A20.
The best is East of Dover. Just drive past the Castle, then take a right before crossing the M20. After a snaky ride, a car park to the right will allow you to see the whole of Dover port, and any ships passing the Strait.
Good luck, ssLewis

Do you think they would let us set up camp for a few days I'll bring the BBQ, if you bring the tent & Malcolm can provide the ribs!

Pity NCL don't have the ship trackers online, then we could see where she'd got to. There must be some way of knowing maybe a few hours in advance of when she's going to be passing through.

Louey.. re the P&O "new ships".. is this an offer for a 24hr return crossing on a new ferry? I've not seen an ad, but looks good to me, I need to stock the wine & cheese cupboard, along with the washing powder which is half price.

Pam
