Here is the story:

Jubilee is headed to Australia
23/6/2003

Carnival Cruise Lines’ Jubilee will transfer to P&O Cruises Australia in Autumn 2004, joining Pacific Sky and more than doubling the P&O brand’s capacity in the region. The news was announced at today’s annual general meeting for Carnival Corp. & plc shareholders in Southampton, the first post-merger gathering for shareholders of dual-listed company.
Built in 1986, the 47,262gt Jubilee carries 1,486 passengers. The Jubilee and Pacific Sky will sail year-round on seven- to 14-day cruises to the South Pacific islands of New Caledonia, Fiji, Vanuata and Tonga as well as to New Zealand and Australia, including a schedule from Brisbane for part of the year, opening up a new market for P&O Cruises Australia. The opportunity of the arrival of the Jubilee will also be taken to extend the seasonal deployment of the Pacific Sky in New Zealand, supporting the further growth of this market, Carnival Corp. & plc said.

These two Australian ‘Fun Ships’ will join the premium-market Pacific Princess, which is also deployed in the Australian market for part of the year. After leaving service for the Carnival brand, Jubilee will undergo a multi-million-dollar refurbishment and transformation into a P&O Cruises Australia vessel.

Carnival Corp. & plc chairman Micky Arison said the transfer of Jubilee to the Australia fleet exemplifies the company’s ability to optimize asset utilization in order to maximize returns for the group. P&O Princess Cruises ceo Peter Ratcliffe called Australia and New Zealand ‘rapidly growing cruise markets’ and said ‘the addition of the Jubilee significantly expands our presence in the region while enabling P&O Cruises Australia to upgrade its product offerings with amenities and facilities desired by today's consumers. Ratcliffe added that P&O Cruises Australia carries approximately 61,000 passengers a year and the addition of the Jubilee is expected to boost annual passenger counts to more than 150,000.

Any guesses about her new name? Pacific Star, Pacific Sun, Pacific Surf?

Will they give her a new funnel like they did to Tropicale when she left the fleet? Somehow I think they will keep the winged funnel- a new trademark for the Australian market perhaps.

theres been suggestions made on this cruisetalk board that such a move may occur!

well it still a great suprise to me - if all goes to plan it will be exciting to see another ship downunder and i hope its itinerys arent just restricted to syndey and the south pacific! it would be good if it incorperated such routes as those explored by leo & virgo.

i know to most cruise fans out there that this is just another minor shuffle of ships- but to australians its a big deal! we love to see new options opening up in the local cruising scene

Can someone with photoshop savvy give us a rendering of Jubilee in Pacific Sky livery?

In addition to stripping the Jubilee of it's Carnival Line interior, I hope they get rid of the funnel too.

Personally, I think a Carnival style ship in Australia will do VERY well. In fact, Carnival really would not have to make any changes to JUBILEE if they didn't want to. Of course I realize Carnival does not want to market a Carnival ship in Australia, but a P&O ship so changes will be made.

Many Australian's love to party, drink, and carry on to a greater degree then any Carnival ship I have sailed, so JUBILEE should be right up their alley!

I'm not saying this in anyway to put down Australians. On the contrary, Australia is one of my favorite countries and Sydney is one of my all time favorite cities. I am lucky to call several Australian's as friends and they are some of the most fun loving people I have ever come across.

Watch out JUBILEE!

Best,
Ernie

She would look something like this, I did change the funnel since the characteristic Carnival funnel is a sort of trademark.

Best, Onno

She looks pretty good!

I thought they might leave the winged funned because Carnival has no ships in Australia, and therefore the winged funned would not confuse any brand identity in that market.

Also, if Carnival plans to send other ships to Australia (Holiday, Celebration?) they won't have to change those funnels as well.

Finally, the unique winged funnel may help give P&O Australia a very recognizable identity down under- the same way it worked for Carnival in the US.

I wonder if this plan had been place for some time, or if Carnival finally made the decision to expand the Australian market after seeing the success of Superstar Leo and Virgo?

Here's the key:

quote:
These two Australian FUN SHIPS will join the premium cruise ship Pacific Princess
(emphasis added).

It looks like Carnival wants P&O Australia to be the Carnival down under, while keeping Pacific Princess as the Princess down under. Perhaps in a few years Pacific won't be marketed under P&O Australia but rather Princess Australia... and maybe there will be a Carnival Australia...

I doubt the other two will be move soon. HOLIDAY will move to Jacksonville and expand Carnival's product. And then the CELEBRATION is doing pretty good in Galveston, but who knows.

The JUBILEE doesn't look bad in PACIFIC SKY's livery. I suggest they rename her PACIFIC JUBILEE or PACIFIC CARNIVAL.

I really like Jubilee with the wide blue and yellow stripe down the hull. It helps to break up the very large white hull and superstructure. Many Carnival ships with thier lifeboats on the top deck suffer from a slab-sided milk carton look. The stripe gives the ship more visual distinction and lessons the boxiness.

I dont think you will see a Carnival Australia as The Princess/P&O Brand is very strong and has been for many years, so why change!

Pacific Sky's new running mate should do very well Downunder! I too think she will be renamed Pacific something!!

I wonder if they will re-engine the Pacific Sky soon as she was the last ship in the world fit with Steam Turbines!!

If they keep to tradition then maybe we will see a Pacific Jubilee or even Pacific Sun!

I wonder why they choose the Jubilee over the Holiday or Celebration as I believe the Holiday is the oldest in that class!

I have never sailed and do not plan to sail any Carnival ship; looking over the Jubilee deck plans she seems not to have a connection to the sea [as do all the RCL ships]. There is a blank wall with no windows on one of the upper decks.

I was advised that Carnival ships are designed to have the passengers on deck during the day and into the public rooms at night.

Princess/P&O ships are known--even the Grand class-- to fully connect to the ocean.

Will they not just redecorate for the Aussie market, but reconfigure the ships for the proper ocean connection?

I'd have to disagree about the GRAND-class; they don't seem to have much "ocean connection" at all.

Same for VOYAGER OF THE SEAS.

The non-VOYAGER RCI ships are a different story.

Any ideas on plans to base another ship out of Galveston? The abcense of Jubilee could put a strain on the Celebration.

The plan to replace JUBILEE's abcense has been announced longtime ago. CARNIVAL PRIDE will replace ELATION down in Los Angeles in September 2002 and ELATION will move to Galveston. Then JUBILEE will move down to San Juan and do 7 days cruises Southern Caribbean. The news that JUBILEE will be going to Australia was announced just recently.

I have had a look at Jubilees deck plans,to see what they are sending us.
At least she has a purpose built buffet area.
My only problem with Pacific Sky is the bun fight at the Buffet........
