We are in the middle of a freak early April snow/rain/ice/ice pellet storm here in Southern Ontario and after arriving at the airport this morning and checking in, going through Immigration, etc. and waiting until about 1 hour before flight time (11am), we were informed that ALL flights had been cancelled.

It was a nightmare retreiving our luggage and then waiting outside in the cold, in summer clothes, for a cab.

My TA re-booked me for tomorrow, but I had no seat assignment and AC couldn't guarantee that I would get on the flight, or could they even guarantee that the flight would be going considering that we were going to be hit by another ice storm tonight.

This "old" gal, can't take going through all this again, only to be told "sorry you haven't got a seat on the plane" or that the flight has been cancelled again, so I decided to cancel. It's only money - yes, I know it's a lot - but my peace of mind is more important. There will always be another cruise.

I felt so sorry for all the little children going to Orlando (that flight was also cancelled) who were so looking forward to seeing Mickey Mouse. How do you tell a little one "not this time dear". They were all so excited and I could just see the sadness in their eyes as we left the terminal.

Even the "big" guys with their golf clubs looked like little children with the frowns on their faces. I ams sure they they were looking forward to a week away from the wife and kids. Actually, I bet it was the wives more disappointed that the flight was cancelled because they were probably looking forward to a week of peace and quiet without the guys.

I was flying to Tampa to pick up the Veendam. Ports were Montego Bay, Grand Cayman and Cozumel.

Oh, well, that's life. It could have been worse. I could have got out to the airport to-day and either not been given a seat or the flight may have been delayed and I would have then missed the ship altogether.

A few flights are getting out to-day, but a lot are still being cancelled.

Sympatico:

Did you use HAL's Air/Sea programme? Or do your own air?

While it's only money...if you can salvage something out of it - why not try.

I would recommend that you contact HAL's customer service department and see if they might offer you a Future Cruise Credit. I mean they do have your money and you've not sailed on the product yet.

Since all the lines are scrambling to get passengers onboard (just look at the prices out there)...they cannot afford to upset their existing, loyal clientele.

Just a suggestion...go for it and let us know the outcome.

Jekyll - Originally my air was booked through HAL, but when they had me flying Delta, Toronto to Atlanta to Tampa, I refused. TA cancelled HAL's air and TA booked through AC.

I will get the money back for the hotel, my air and one Limo. TA is going to work on getting all the money back from HAL through the insurance company. I booked through Thomas Cooke and they have their own Insurance.

Looks like some flights are departing to-day, but whose to say that I would have had a seat on the Tampa plane.

As I am going again in August to Alaska, I will suggest to my TA that she recommend that HAL maybe would credit me on the Alaskat trip.

Lots of news about the storm, AC, GTAA in the Globe & Mail and Toronto Star this morning. Check out both on the internet or maybe you get the G&M.

Monday's opening game at Yankee Stadium in New York will probably be postponed because a considerable snowfall is predicted. This is Spring?

Happened in Toronto the first year the Blue Jays played their opener!

Re my cancelled trip - even if I had been able to get on the plane today I would have missed the ship as the plane did not arrive in Tampa until 4:30pm and the ship sailed at 5pm, unless of course they were delayed waiting for other passengers. Maybe my trip was not meant to be.

AH SPRING! - looks like it from my picture window, cloudless blue sky. MOTH went for his morning walk - sidewalks like ice rinks - he fell - no bones broken but ego bruised - probably his bum too! - the wind, he says would cut you in two - a bone chilling -10 degrees!

Sympatico, I wish you luck with you HAL claim.

My daughter had a couple meant to be leaving Toronto yesterday morning on US air (cancelled) going on the Golden Princess. They were celebrating their 10th wedding anniversary. They had booked the Renewal of Wedding vows package, my daughter had managed to get them upgraded at no extra cost from a balcony cabin to a mini suite. They had arranged for their 3 children to be with grandparents and the Ice storm has it ruined. One feels really sorry for thisx couple as they had saved for so long for this trip.

Sympatica: Re your message to me regarding my daughters clients, I will keep you in touch. Obviously there is very little Louise could do until tomorrow (Monday). One point to make however. The Insurance Companies do not insure for an Act of God but this was not that I my mind, it was gross inefficiency at Pearson Airport. They were aware that there was an Ice storm on the way three days before it happened, so why were they out of de-icing fluid. Lets face it we can have this kind of weather until the middle of April. The year before we came to live in Canada, we came to look at Canada. We had a young family of three children and wanted to make sure we were making the right decision in coming here from the UK. We travelled by car from New York to Grand Island, NY on the 9th April, our sons birthday and travelled through a terrible snow storm most of the way. That was 1974. If one can prove this was inefficiency and not Act of God the Insurance should pay.

Sorry for your disappointment, Sympatico. I think you made a wise choice to not put yourself through more "wear and tear" with the odds so poor you could arrive at the ship on time.

I hope HAL agrees to apply a credit to your August cruise.
