Heard from my brother who is on board the Carnival Victory right now. The ship only made it in to San Juan at 4am this morning after major propulsion problems (they were supposed to have arrived in San Juan yesterday at 4pm and left at Midnight). My brother said he and his travel companion returned to their cabin at the stern of the ship on the morning of the 11th at 4 am to hear a very strange noise and vibration coming from below. Then it abruptly stopped. He said the ships wake went from being as wide as the boat to much much smaller. The ship is missing the port of Saint Maarten. They go to St. Thomas tomorrow and then it's back to Miami. A passenger also had a heart attack on the ship and had to be airlifted off of the ship yesterday as well.

One thing my brother noted to me was interesting. He said that the moving map on the television that shows the position of the ship is saying the ship is in St. Maarten and not in St. Thomas. He commented that obviously it's not using GPS to track the position of the ship but rather it's some sort of canned video tape. That's really cheap and lame.

I agree, sounds like they used video tape instead of using GPS to track the position. I wander if other ships do this too ?

I think Princess uses GPS for theirs (the way it should be of course). However, it doesn't surprise me that Carnival would use a canned video tape.

So what are they going to do about the problem??? Will the ship have to be drydocked? Can anyone find more information about this, I am going on her in April and am intrested! Thanks!

I was onboared the Victory last week. The engine was repaired while we were in San Juan. The revised itinerary was:
Wednesday San Juan 8:00 A.M. to 10:00 P.M.
Thursday St Thomas 8:00 A.M. to 6: P.M.
Friday at sea
Saturday Nassau 1:00 P.M. to 6:00 P.M.
