The fist thing to say is does anyone know where there are some nice photos of the Millennium in her new colors from recently? The other thing is I hope Infinity gets the new colors because the new ones look better. What does anyone else think about the colors.I think they are nice.

The blue and white is much better than the blue, red and gold, which made the ships look at little too much like Disney Ships or Fisher Price toys!

I think that the white is unimaginative, and shows more easily the edgy look of the ship.In other words it turned a nice ship into a floating fridge.

I much prefer the new blue/white scheme for the M-Class ships. It's the original Celebrity colors and looks much more classic then the red/yellow/blue/white scheme. Celebrity gave the M-Class ships their original paint scheme to remind people of race cars, since they had gas turbines. I thought they just looked tacky. Of course the ironic thing is these ships are no faster then the average cruise ship. Celebrity is reinventing their product, and part of the re-branding includes a new ad campaign, new logo, new onboard amenities, new management team, and of course the new paint scheme for the M-Class ships. Finally the entire fleet will be uniform! Personally, I think Celebrity is on the right track, after reaching a low point during the last couple years.

Regarding INFINITY, yes, she will emerge from dry-dock in Virginia with the new paint scheme. She is scheduled to sail on March 6, reaching Ft. Lauderdale on March 8. Her first scheduled sailing is March 9. I am sailing on her second sailing, on March 23 from Ensenada to Hawaii. I'm very much looking forward to it, and also to returning to my once favorite cruise line.

Attached is a picture of MILLENNIUM in the new colors, along with a link to other photos.

Best,
Ernie

eroller,

Do you have any idea when Summit will be painted with the new scheme? I am hoping to sail on the Summit in Alaska this summer and I am hoping that she will be repainted.

I see that you live in Atlanta. I live near Atlanta myself. Small world!!!

With the way the new paint is going so far with Millennium and Infinity I would say Summit would be August or September 2003 and Constellation probably January 2004 or so.Probaly something like that.just think of the space between Millennium and now with Infinity.I am really wanting to see the whole class like that.

Hi seatrial,
I can't really say when SUMMIT will receive the new paint scheme. I would imagine during her next scheduled dry-dock, and I'm not sure when that is. Being that she is fairly new, I would guess that it is not scheduled until sometime next year.

The only reason INFINITY received the new paint scheme so early is because of an unscheduled dry-dock to fix a problem with one of the pods. Celebrity decided to go ahead and do it as long as the ship was going to be out of the water anyway. I don't think INFINITY was originally scheduled for a dry-dock until sometime much later this year.

Hope this helps... and nice to see another Atlantan on the board!

Best,
Ernie

eroller, I totally agree with you. The old paint scheme reminded me of a comic book cruise ship. I much perfer the blue and white. Much more elegent- Celebrity is finally back on the right track.

Here is a photo of Summit docked next to Century... you can see how the new Millinnium colors are a much better match to the existing fleet- and how out of place the red-yellow-blue-white looked:

Everyone is entitled his or her own opinion, but as far as my opinion, I think Celebrity screwed up when they repainted the Millennium. They took a new futuristic ship and made it into an old looking ship. I have always found Celebrity's ships to be very unattractive with the blue and white paint scheme. When Millennium came out, at first, it took a little getting use too, cause it was unlike any other ship afloat. I have heard all kinda names about it such as a lego ship, comic book ship and all the other names, but in my eyes, it was a VERY FUTURISTIC LOOK. Maybe in the 1980s & 1990s the blue and white paint scheme was nice, but this is the year 2003, and as time goes on, things get newer, and more modern. Everything changes, look at today's cars and compare them to a 1970 Dodge, you will find many things different.
As I mentioned up above, I found the Millennium Class Ships to look VERY FUTURISTIC looking unlike any other ship afloat, the ships looked happy, and in my eyes, "different is good." Now, the Millennium looks horrible if you ask me. Its plain, its dull, it looks older. It doesn't even look like a new ship compared to what it use to look like. I am sure everyone here on the boards will start bashing me, but I considering myself a very experienced cruiser and as I said up above, everyone is entitled his or her own opinion and this is my opinion. I will be looking into a cruise this year On The Summit "BEFORE" the repaint it with those horrible blue and white stripes.
I wanna add one more thing, earlier, I said "different is good" another example is NORWEGIAN DAWN. Instead of it just being plain white, all the colors on it make it look great with the dolphins and lady liberty on the side. You gotta admit, there is no other ship out there like it. (that has Lady Liberty & Dolphins on the side)
To me, when you find something different, its an eye catcher, and it draws attention.
For some, when things change for the better they cant accept a change and have to have things the same forever. If things stayed the same forever, where would the world be today?????
Wishing everyone calm seas & smooth sailing
Jeff

I like the new paint job to make Millennium-class ships look more like the Century-class paint scheme. I think it's more classy. The original Millennium-class paint scheme was aweful I thought....creative, but still aweful.

The Millenium's original scheme with the dark blue hull did not work with the large cutouts for the lifeboats. In addition, the gold bands were too large, creating a cartoon look.

Any brand must have a cohesive, consistent message and look. Celebrity had to give all its ships the same livery, and the older one (despite being a bit dated) was the best choice. It also make the Millenium class design a little more cohesive. The bottom line is the Millenium class' basic shape is not an attractive or graceful one.

Everything changes, look at today's cars and compare them to a 1970 Dodge, you will find many things different.

Look at todays cars and you have the Plymouth Prowler and the Chrysler PT Cruiser, both throw backs to cars of the 1930's. The future is Retro or "Retro-Future" as some people say. I like the "Retro-Future" direction (until it get's to the 1960's and 1970's - YUCK, then it's time to go back to the '30's again).

Remember, "Everything old is new again."

The Norwegian Dawn makes me want to puke. Ships shouldn't be graffitied like that.

I have several guesses as to why Celebrity might have tried and then changed the new hull colors for the Millenium class.

1. Perhaps they felt at some point during the design stages that the dark blue and white paint scheme of the older fleet-mates did not suit the outer design of these 4 new ships.

2. Perhaps Celebrity decided to promote a more upscale image and distance themselves somewhat in the public eye (and Travel Agent community) from RCI brand, and they went with the new dark hull to look more upscale. (Similar to HAL ships being dark hulled compared to sister line Carnival Lines white hulls). Just like the dark blue uniforms of the Captain and Officers always looks classier, more formal, especially at night, than the cruising whites.

3. Perhaps the entire fleet was to eventually been painted in the new colors but once the Millenium class had entered service this idea was dropped perhaps due to negative comments from staff, guests, agents, ect. Maybe even Celebrity management came to dislike the colors too.
I wonder what the older fleet mates would have looked like in that paint scheme.

We may never know the real reasons for the new colors and why they are now going to be repainted so soon after entering service. A while back, a fellow poster here advised it could cost a million dollars or more to give the ss United States a coat of fresh paint. That cost may or may not have included a good sand-blasting too. Since these ships are even bigger than the Big U it stands to reason that to repaint them will not be cheap.
