Celebrity Cruises announced that it has cut short the current Infinity cruise and is canceling two cruises on Infinity to replace ball-bearing units in the ship’s propulsion system. The ship must enter drydock to replace the bearings, which will result in the cancellation of its February 2 and February 13 sailings. The ship is expected to return to its scheduled sailings on February 23.

The first cancelled sailing, Sunday (Feb 2), is a 11-night cruise from Ensenada, Mexico, to Hawaii. The February 13 sailing is a 10-night cruise from Hawaii to Ensenada. Infinity is currently completing a 14-night trans-Canal sailing that ends in San Diego Sunday.

Guests booked on the cancelled sailings will receive a full refund and a voucher for a 50-percent discount on a future Celebrity cruise of 12 nights or less, departing on or before April 1, 2004, excluding Christmas and New Year’s sailings. Travel agents will receive full commissions, plus a $50 rebooking fee per cabin when their clients reschedule their cruise.

"The thrust-bearing failure in one of the ship’s propulsion systems developed very quickly, and while the ship continues to operate safely, its speed has had to be reduced," said Jack Williams, president and chief operating officer of Celebrity Cruises. "Unfortunately, this has resulted in us having to take the ship to an unscheduled drydock. I want to personally apologize of all our guests whose vacation plans have been disrupted due to this disappointing event."

Celebrity has established a special Help Desk to assist guests and travel agents with rebooking, air transportation and other issues. That toll-free number is 1-888-701-7192.

The cancelled cruises are expected to have a negative impact on the earnings of Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. of $.03 to $.04 per share.

See, I told you that these Pod's just cannot be trusted!

It will be interesting to see how the QM2's Pods cope with the rigours of the North Atlantic?

Joe,
The cruise ended in Acapulco. Infinity will go to drydock in SFO or Victoria for repairs.

Malcolm,

Maybe it will be back to the old days when liners could "drop a screw" in mid-Atlantic. Now they'll drop a pod!

Repairs being done (again) in Victoria, BC, Canada. Seems a graving dock rather than a floating dock in a better and safer choice.

that is a log way to tow infinity since her engines
are disable.
also note that propellers do not
drop off since they are now
cast in one piece.
in the titanic era blades were
bolted on to a hub.

Being towed? Thought she was running on 1 of her pods, making about 14 knots.

Moodus...since when are Infinity's engines "disabled" and who said she was being towed? The problem is the bearings on a pod, the same as last year on the other one.
Evidently the passengers are being landed at Acapulco and the ship going to Victoria to be back in service from San Diego on the 21st. Feb.

IF she was being towed she sure wouldn't be able to do that.

At MaritimeMatters.com , they said

quote:
February 1: Celebrity's INFINITY arrived in Acapulco, Mexico Wednesday at reduced speed with bearing problems reported below (January 30). Press reports state that the passengers will be flown home and the ship will remain in port until repairs can be made. A Celebrity Cruises spokesman said that the 14-night cruise from Fort Lauderdale to San Diego was cut short because of mechanical problems. Celebrity officials were trying to determine which dry dock would take INFINITY the ship for repairs.

Looks like the ship is staying at Acapulco.

On the same subject Norwegian Star is also having azipod problems, and having to cut out the stop at Fanning Island. These are ABB Azipods, not the problem prone Mermaids, and it's a transformer acting up on one pod so that shouldn't need any drydocking.

Infinity is underway to Newport News, VA to drydock. Celebrity's press release didn't say if under tow or her own power.... but, they did sy the damage was greater than they had thought... (Duh)

The trip's a little longer... but probably a lot easier on an incapacitated ship.

Celebrity did cancel a further departure as well.. Feb 23.

Victoria Shipyards confirmed this morning that they were not selected to do the repair work. Seems that yhe work will take longer than planned, and having the ship in BC waters after repairs would have her 10 days sailing from the next scheduled port of embarkation.
