One man's "...drag down the outward appearance" is another man's "...give her a futuristic look". I am sure somebody likes them.
Somebody?

Maybe Princess put those "things" on the funnel to sell advertising space- like for cigarettes or alcoholic beverages (imagine the bottle on its side).
Either way, Princess needs to shoot whoever is responsible for their exterior design. (Maybe they can launch him out of one of those canons).
Also, there is a web page on Coral Princess' inagural...
1. Her bow is one of the best of any modern cruise ship- right up there with Aurora in my opinion. Sharp, clean, strong... perfect.2. I really like the foward mast design. It's strong and tall- it functions as exhaust vents for the galley- and it is distinctive.3. I like the tiered aft decks- not as sweeping and beautiful as on Aurora or classic liners- but far better than recent shoebox ship designs.
Top things I hate:
1. The funnel- enough said.2. Lack of glass and observation areas. Recent designs by Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, and even HAL all incorporate more glass to view the sea from public spaces. Coral (like Spirit-class ships) seem too closed off from the sea.3. Like the Grand-class Coral has tiered balcony decks (you can look down on the balcony below yours). I'm not a fan of this lack of privacy given they are called "private balconies".

Exactly. If they wanted to stand out, how about designing an aesthetically pleasing funnel. Those seem to be in short supply these days, as witnessed by this abomination or Zuiderdam's wastebasket design.
quote:The gross tonnage of the ship is not 88000 but 91627. The "objects" on the funnel doesn't have any function at all.
Why did Princess market the ship as 88,000 tons? 88,000 compared to 91,627 is a BIG difference. This is going to be a dumb question, but if you work for Princess, why are you "marketing" HAL's Ryndam?

I am sure that Ryndam will answer when he gets a chance, but as I understand it, Ryndam was the first cruise ship he served on and that is why he chose that as his id.
Many of the crew on cruise ships are working on a fixed-length contract and often move between cruise lines. The officer or crew member that spends his/her career with the same cruise line is rare. Most you will find have worked with multiple cruise lines.
My question is: WHY ARE THESE THINGS BUILT INTO THE FUNNEL WHEN THEY HAVE NO PURPOSE?
I would think that perhaps they would somehow create a jet stream of compressed air to re-direct the exhaust higher in the air...so as to avoid engine fumes on deck.
Ryndam...I'd love to hear more from you about this.
At first I did not liked the bow because I was expecting something more rounded, but now I think it suits the ship rather well. The overall usage of “bleu” tinted glass looks nice and very princess like as well.
Take the car industry most of the design elements are don for fun and not out of function. The same goes for ships. Do we all remember the days when fake funnels where introduced on the liners, it was don because more funnels was associated with more speed. The Coral rockets (functional or not) have the same result it contributes to the cruise experience and to the association of the traveler. And there you have the function of the rockets. I think the Rockets would be more appreciated or accepted if they where installed on a better designed and proportioned funnel.
I don’t exactly know a technical function either of the rockets but I belief that the gas turbines are located inside the bird cadge, and this is probably the reason for the massive look it generates.
Overall I’m pleased with the rockets because it again allows the ship designers to make interesting designs and not to think in the only functional thus economic profitable fashion that started off in the eighties.

The ship is very elegant from MOST angles and i think the large funnel suits the overall design, it looks as one with the ship unlike those THINGS Carnival sticks on their already ugly floating bricks!!!
The rocket things are different and give the ship a modern and futureistic look, i think they will grow on most people, anyway those aside i think most people should like the overall design of the ship
I know, it's all a matter of taste, but as far as I am concern, she is the least attractive ship I ever seen. And being a brand-new ship, she already shows rust but the ancors.
