Has anyone dined recently in any of the specialty restaurants on the Celebrity ships - Olympic, Normandia, United States, Ocean Liners?

How was the food, service? Was it worth the extra fee?

when we were aboard the "summit" on her second maiden cruise we enjoyed a night of feasting in the normandie restuarant....yes i would say that $25 US ($40 CND) was worth the price to enjoy 5 or 6 star service and food. some people said that the food was the same served in the main restaurant, but it was'nt. i was lucky to get a menu from the restaurant and when i look at what we ate....it would have been way over $100 in a swanky hotel or similar. i must say that when it comes to the desserts... order the chocolate souffle...oh my begeesus...i was in heaven....for the main entre i enjoyed "cote de veau normandie"...milk fed veal chops in a calvados sauce...mmmmm....i can tell you that the time spent is to be enjoyed at a 5 course, 3 hour duration...so you will need patience....the only problem was the 2 waiters having a verbal dis-agreement on something in the galley and who was in charge of the section we were in...it was quite amusing to see the 2 men acting like children...it did help us pass some time between meals....i loved it.....jeff

We had dinner in the Olympia restaurant on the Millenium in June of this year. The setting is lovely, the atmosphere is truly first class, but...

First, I think the service is overkill, the waitstaff are overly attentive. It's hard to have a conversation because you are constantly being interrupted by staff asking you if everything is okay. I realize there's a fine line between being ignored and overwhelmed, but the staff is a bit over the top.

Second, there is no question that the food is better than in the main dining room, but neither of us was convinced that it was $25 a head better, and the food is really what it is all about. The menu was loaded toward the type of dishes that lend themselves to "showy" presentations, in other words flambees and the like, rather than the kind of dish that requires extensive time in the kitchen - sauces requiring reductions and the like that are the test of a real gourmet cuisine.

Finally, the special wine list means that almost all of the lower price wines have disappeared, replaced by bottles in the $100 and up range. It's virtually impossible to find anything on the list for less than $50 and when we selected a bottle for $45, the wine steward sneered at us!

Maybe it's because I live in Montreal, a city with literally hundreds of excellent restaurants, but I left less than impressed.

The bottom line: if you want a fancy presentation in a very attractive setting -- go for it, but don't go expecting a true gourmet experience.

it's a shame you did'nt enjoy your meal....but the meal we had definatly would have been considered gourmet. i have travelled the world and enjoyed a lot of 5 and 6 star (thought 5 was the highest) hotels especially in europe and did'nt enjoy as many meals in these establishments considered supreme....i'm not gloating (sp.) but the meal aboard the "summit" was very special and i think you may have been expecting the world for $25...and yea...the waiters were a bit of an overkill with the service...i remember that...but it's better than having to call for service everytime you want something...jeff

My husband and I dined in the United States 3 times, and twice in the Olympic. We thought it was easily worth the $25 per person, and thoroughly enjoyed each visit. Each restaurant contains artifacts of its namesake, which lends some extra drama and romance to dining there. I felt compelled to touch the wood panels in the Olympic; they're so beautiful. The United States had the etched glass from its namesake, and the decor was almost stark in its modern simplicity.

I suppose some people would not be comfortable with the attentive service, but I loved it. Food was delectable; would especially recommend the goat cheese souffle' and the sea bass. The cheese cart was a bit of a "culture" shock, if you'll pardon the pun! Lots of REALLY strong tasting/smelling cheeses to sample; found some nice mild varieties, too. All of the desserts were right up my alley; couldn't pick a favorite with a gun to my head.

If you're sailing one of Celebrity's M-class ships, you really owe it to yourself to try the specialty restaurant at least once. In my opinion, it's not a big risk for $25.00!
