The ship was built in 1980 in Poland and was the first in a series of 7 identical sisterships followed by LEV TOLSTOY (ex PALMIRA, now JASMINE) DMITRIY SHOSTAKOVICH (now PALOMA I), KONSTANTIN SIMONOV (now THE IRIS), MIKHAIL SUSLOV (now PETR PERVYJ), MIKHAIL SHOLOKHOV & KONSTANTIN CHERNENKO (now RUSS) finished in 1986.

The ship is named after a famous Soviet singer Georg Ots (1920-1975).From the beginning GEORG OTS was transformed to Estonian Shipping Co based in Tallinn and operated Tallinn - Helsinki route flying the USSR flag. In 1986 she was used as a floating hotel in Reykjavik (Iceland) during Gorbatchev Reagan summit.After the breakdown of the USSR in 1991 she continued to sail on Tallinn-Helsinki route flying the Estonian flag and changing the title from Cyrillic to English letters.In 2001 the ship was laid up due to its unprofitability and was up for sale. Finally she was acquired for the 2 mln USD by the Ministry of Transport of Russia in November 2002. She is flying the Russian flag and the name is back in Cyrillic letters. Home port St.Petersburg.The price for a 45 hours journey ranges from 50 up to 200 USD depending on a cabin.
