Platnium (ex Hyundai Pungak ex Island Princess ex Island Venture) has been sold by Ocean Cruise Line/Orient Lines founder Gerry Herrod to the Portuguese shipowners Arcalia Shipping. She will be renamed Discovery and will operate in the Mediterranean in the summer and Brazil in the winter.

Arcalia will bring both of their other ships, Funchal and Princess Danae, to Brazil in the winters as well.

It's nice to see this ship back in service, and in what seem to be good hands .

A fine ship for Arcalia Shipping/ Classic International Cruises.
The Island Princess is far better than her new fleetmates Princess Danae, Arion and Funchal.
The first one isn't well manteined as during her days with Costa, the latter needs a refurbisment.
The portuguise company often charters its ships to other operators, mainly in the european market.

Hopefully they can pick up her sister too.
Although they are not glitzy, no balconies, they are very comfortable ships, that are easy to find your way around, and everything is where it should be.

Her space planning is a benchmark for other ships to follow.

Updating the interior decor would make the 2 some of the finest ships around.

Only if they could remount those paint shaker FIAT diesel engines. Silicone pad systems work wonders.

PS: fuel consumption: 70 tons a day @ 18 knots
trial speed: 21.5 knots
range: 10,000 miles

I was told that the Pacific Princess was sold, cash transacted, and is on lease back to P&O

It is hinted in the trade that the Pacific Princess after she leaves P abd O at the end of October will join her fleet mate Victoria under a German cruise line Holiday Kreuzfahrten. What a great pair,if they look after them.Ideal for European cruising, and even for longer world voyages.Like the Mraco Polo and Crown Dynasty, there is a market for this type of classic older tonnage,if marketed with skill and top maintenance.

Gerry Herrod is a pretty smart businessman and if he's sold the Platinum he must think she's not worth spending the money on to get a good enough return at today's rates.

I don't think he feels that the climate is right to start a cruise line, period.

Gerry Herrod is out of the cruise business for the forseeable future. He took posession of Platinum on August 28th of last year and has been trying to sell her ever since the terrorist attacks on NYC and Washington.

He was involved in a joint venture to resurrect some of the Ren R's but has since backed out.

He made a bundle with Ocean Cruise Line, a fortune with Orient and an absolute killing when he sold his stock in NCL @ $40/share. I'm sure he's quite happy counting his money at this point.
