I'd also be very interested to hear about Hebridean Princess.

Just got a brochure in the mail from them a few days ago - certainly one of the most impressive brochures I've ever seen.

I imagine that the sort of person who would pick this ship would be very interesting.

The new "Spirit" looks interesting too - perhaps a less pretentious, but every bit as luxurious (and expensive) alternative to Seabourn etc.?

For me it is P & O's Victoria, followed by Canberra, Fairsea/Fairwind, Noordam and Carnival Spirit. That is out of 32 cruises on 21 ships. Spirit does not fit with the rest I know, but still was very impressed.

Hello Green,

My Hebridean Princess experience was nothing like any
other cruise I've taken. The ship feels like a
private yacht you sail on with some of your guests,
many from the UK with very few Americans.
The cabins are magnificent, each one individually
decorated, like a country house. I did the inner and
outer Hebridean Islands, the scenery is fantastic, and
there is a lot to see on shore.
It is a very different experience, no casino (I did save
a lot of money), no shows, there is a very nice
library and most evenings we got acquainted and
chatted with fellow passengers.

The weather was a little cold, but we did spend a lot
of time on deck admiring the scenery.

The restaurant is very beautiful and the food is
wonderful.

The ship is expensive but worth every cent.

Sam

I must admit... As much as I like "traditional" cruising, I do feel the pull of things like Hebridean Princess or the Star Clippers... For something different... And in the case of the latter, expensive !

It sounds like a wonderful trip - rather like the Orient-Express, perhaps... But at sea.

I must admit I was stunned at the photos of the ship... I knew little about her before I got the brochure and despite her ungraceful external appearance, her interiors look like a top-notch country house hotel.

I've been on these:

Raffaello (1973)
SeaBreeze (1997)
Bolero (1999)
Maasdam (2002)

and we will be going on the Maasdam again in December!

My favorite was the Seabreeze, with the Maasdam a close second!

Sam - sounds like you really enjoyed the trip - great itinerary.

I regularly receive a brochure but with things as they are, we'll have to win a lottery or something before we can afford it.

Happy cruisin'

Hi Green

It was pretty expensive, so I saved in other aspects
of my trip like taking a less expensive flight and
staying in a B&B in the U.K. Also on the ship I saved
money by not donating large sums to the casino as I
sometimes do.

This is a great question. I've never actually thought about all of the ships I've been on. Like another of the respondees I've sailed since I was a little boy. 1963 on the Iberia, '64 on the Arcadia and '65 on the Canberra. Since then the list (and I'm sure I'll forget some) is
Rotterdam, Oriana, Amerikanis, Carla C, Fairwind, Oceanic, Leonardo Da Vinci, Australis, Sea Escape (4 different ones), Ellenis, Federico C, Carnivale, Mardi Gras, Festivale, Tropicale, Holiday, Celebration, Fantasy, Ecstasy, Carnival Destiny, Carnival Triumph, Sovereign of the Seas, Viking Serenade, (and the Scandinavia before her),Song of Norway, Majesty of the Seas, Grandeur of the Seas, Independance, Voyager of the Seas, Ocean Princess, Constellation, QE2, Volendam, Veendam, Statendam, (all the old ones),Sagafjord, Vistafjord, Doric, Discovery, Queen Mary and a couple of overnight ferries.
the question as to which is best is simple. There is never a bad day on a cruise. They are all great, just some are better than others. The fact that we all share the same passion says it all.
