Hi!

When I was in Corfu a month ago, there was a wreck of a Greek passenger vessel near the cruise pier. Does anyone know which ship she was?
Some pictures:

I'd be very grateful for any info!

Regards,
AJL

Hello,

No clue but I'm very interested... Too small a ship to be in any of the major books listing the various passenger ship wrecks.

Happy Cruising,
Cruiseny

Aleksi, the vessel is most likely the Greek CITY OF PIRAEUS, a small cruise ship that was once used on day cruises to the islands of the Saronic Gulf. She was originally one of 4 Scottish built sisters completed for the Caledonian Steam Packet Company, and was built to run passengers around the West Coast of Scotland in the early 1960's. Her first name was the Maid of Argyll and she was all of 165ft long by 28ft wide. Unable to carry cars, the small ferries were replaced in the early 1970's, the Maid od Argyll being sold to the Greeks during 1973. I believe her 3 sisters may all still exist, the Maid of Aston now being the resturant ship Hispaniola in the River Thames, London. Her other two sisters were sold to Italian owners. How sad to see her derelict and sunk. Aussie

Here she is in her original configuration as the Maid of Argyll. Quite a contrast to AJL's pictures.

Totally off-topic again (sorry cruiseNY!) but I just had my browser set to half-screen, and this topic's header was "Unknown wreck of a passenger..."

...which would be a superb thread!

Yes Aussie 1 and Britanis are right it was the City of Pireaus formerly Maid of Argyll. Her two sister ships which went to Italy are still sailing and the Maid of Ashton now called Hispaniola is a restaurant ship on the Thames and has just been away in dry dock for a refit. City of Pireaus was originally a running mate of the City of Hydra running out of Phileron Bay near Pireaus on day cruises. City of Hydra was involved in a hijacking some years ago and I read recently that she had sunk presumably in some layup berth near Preaus. She was originally the Macbrayne ship Claymore built in 1955 for the overnight service from Oban in Scotland to the Inner Hebrides and had sleeping accommodation for 50 or so passengers and couold be used for a mini cruise.

Sorry if these questions seem bothersome, but this topic has really whetted my interest in these four lovely little sisters. Does anyone have any photos of the Maid of Argyll's sisters, or of her as the City of Pireaus (before the unfortunate incident)? It looks like a fair ammount of rebuilding was done (per Greek tradition). I rather like that new, winged funnel, don't recognise the logo on it though.

Woops, The Maid of Argyll above was named 'City of Corfu' when the photo was taken in the mid 90's.

Below is the 'Hispaniola' on the Thames in London.

These are good-looking little ships. The Greek rebuild was very tasteful IMHO- love that new funnel. I think its nothing short of amazing that, after all these years, 3/4 of these ships are still afloat, 2/4 are still in service, and 4/4 are still, more, or less, in existance. Truly a testament to the skill of their builders and the dilligence of their crews.

Thank you all for the investigation!

The sun deck in the picture of the "City of Corfu", looks very unique, something that hasn't been done ever to a vessel in the Northern Europe... only in Greece...

Thanks!!

Hello,

The one in London doesn't look too good... The original picture looks very nice and the Greek rebuild indeed was done with a good eye for design.

I am happy to hear of smaller ships of this type that are not languishing in some backwater...

Happy Cruising,
Cruiseny

The Greek letter "sigma" on the funnel of the wreck would suggest that she was owned lately by Strintzis lines. Can anyone confirm this?
