I am earning reward points with Carnival. The plan is to take my husband on his first cruise, don't want to shock his system too much with a wild party ship. We Would want something that would appeal to someone in late 50s. He likes to play the slots, enjoys good entertainment, not a big dancer, not real big on fancy dinners. Any suggestions on which Carnival ships would be good?

Reward points? How do you earn them?

Are you thinking only of a 'Carnival' ship or a ship sailing under it's own banner (HAL-Cunard-Seabourn-Windstar-Costa) - all really come under Carnival and each honours past-guest savings earned on any of the above Lines. We sailed Cunard and received a small discount because of previous sailings on HAL.

For the 50+ age group, a 'real Carnival ship' would not be my choice or recommendation.

Hi, My husband and I sailed on the Carnival Victory and found it had something good for any age. We are mid-fifties and enjoyed on board entertainment, many many lounges with different types of music - large casino and plenty of space. I suggest any one of Carnival Victory, Destiny or Triumph. Carnival aims to please all passengers. We've done other lines but were pleased with Carnival.

POOP ON CARNIVAL!

Check out the SS Norway, a ship that can trace her history in your husband's memory; and a much, much classier ship than anything Carnival can offer as well. You mention "reward points". Are they really worth anything if you're buying an obnoxious cruise-experience? Check out some of the reviews for the Norway and Carnival ships posted here and elsewhere. Then take a look at the bang you can get for your buck on the Norway right now .

A perceived promotional discount is not a good reason to book a cruise. I hope you'll do a little research to find the ship that will best promise a wonderful vacation for you and your husband.

Now that we have heard from the Anti-Carnival folks. On to the Question.

Like other cruise lines you can do as much or as little as you like. Carnival is not a party boat if you don't want a party boat. However, I must say that would depend on when you cruise. My wife and I sail in the Winter when school is in session. Therefore very few children and especially few to no college students.

Choose an itinery you would be interested in and don't feel obligated to participate in every activity the Carnival offers.

A Carnival ship for Lisbeth? Do you or your husband smoke? If not, I would recommend the Paradise, the totally smoke-free ship which appeals to a less rowdy, more fitness oriented clientele. Not as gaudy decor as other Carnival ships and the tasteful atrium was the most beautiful we have seen on any ship.

Hi:
I gladly recommend Carnival to all my first time cruisers. However, let me explain why so you can better judge whether this is what you want for your husband. Carnival does a great job of providing the glitz and glamour most First-Timers imagine a cruise ship to be. With the exception of Spring Break Time (End of Feb. thru 2 week of April) they are fine ships that do not really deserve the "party, party Ship" reputation they have. They have lots of varied entertainment venues on board that should appeal to every taste. Now if you want something a little more sedate (read OLD) then you might want to consider Holland America which is owned by Carnival and your "points" will transfer. Don't go on Costa (another Carnival owned line) unless you like long lines and LOTS of smoking.I might also recommend something a little more adventurous as well as relaxing-Windstar which is really luxurous sailing-giving you the cruise ship experience and your husband a more casual time. Finally, you both might enjoy the NCL Sky or Sun which offers "freestyle cruising" (eat when you want, with or without whom you want, where you want)(several restaurants and different styles of food served). NCL offers one of the most relaxing times you can have and is moderately priced like Carnival.
These are general recommendations and do not necessarily represent your best options. A TA can be an invaluable resource to help you get the most return for your cruise investment dollars.
Rick
