Dunno about ATMs. But cellphones depend on the presence of a nearby relay tower...not a common sight at sea.

Might work in port, depending.

Your basic North American cell phone will work if you are in port (or within 4-5 miles of port) at a city in the United States or canada --e.g. Key West, Juneau, Vancouver etc.

The freqencies used in other countries are different from those in the US and Canada. If you have deep pockets you can buy a "world model" cell phone that includes frequencies used almost all over the world -- but be prepared to pay a significantly higher monthly rate as well!

You know what was nice about my cruise earlier this month? NO FRIEKIN' CELL PHONES GLUED TO PEOPLES' EAR EVERYWHERE I TURNED! Also, I didn't hear ANY cell phones ring! Ahhhh, bliss!
Really hated getting back to the real world!

Florida is right on target!
You are going on vacation, leave the cell phone (and the computer) AT HOME!

In a dire emergency, which is really the only thing that should interrupt your vacation anyway, you can always use the ship's satellite phone service.

Oh, I couldn't agree more - leave the darn cell phone and computer at home. For goodness sake, you're on vacation! Here in Toronto it seems every other person has a cell phone glued to their ear. What did we do when we didn't have them - used a pay phone!
And what did we do when we didn't have TV in our cabins? We got along just fine and enjoyed our cruise.

I think most modern ships have ATM's?

Using a cell phone in port will probably cheaper that using the one in your cabin!

Bad news for cell phone haters! There is a new breed of satellite phones which will work anywhere - up mount Everest, Antartica or in the middle of the Atlantic!

There will be no escape!

...staying home with one's cell phone would be cheaper still.
