Has anyone else noticed the degradation in service aboard Celebrity Ships recently?
I have to admit , Celebrity is my favorite cruise line , however, on my last cruise the experience was much different to other cruises. The staff were not friendly, the food was not the same standard, our cabin stewrad never spoke at all! Appart from the initial introductions. He always cleaned our cabin after 3 pm everyday.
I like to take a nap around that time!

Don't get me wrong, I still had a great vacation,
as I always do on Celebrity, however, I felt this one did not meet the 5 star service we had always taken for granted.
CAn anyone else comment on this??

I cruised with Celebrity in 1998 on the Mercury and I was pretty impressed! I've not cruise with Celebrity since, but I can make a few observations.

The Mercury and Galaxy newbuilds seemed to represent the height of Celebrity's reputation, in terms of stylish ships, food and service.

The Millennium newbuild is a different story. It was not very well received by the public or the critics! Many people simply regarded it as looking too big and ugly! Maybe 90,000 tons is also too big for a cruise line which is selling itself as an upmarket (upscale) product, with the personal touch?

Some would argue that Celebrity's reputation has slipped a little in the last 2-3 years? If this it true, I wonder how much of this is a result of the RCI management or Celebrity growing too big?

Comments please?

Malcolm - I'm not sure I agree. I sailed on the Galaxy back in 1998, and last summer on the Millenium. I felt that the service was at the same level, while the food ,while very good, was not quite as memorable, except for the Olympic Resturant which was truly superb. As to the comparison of the ships, I have to say the the decor of the Millenium, was even better than the Galaxy in my opinion. While I agree that the Exterior of the ship is less graceful, everyone I talked to onboard thought that the ship was beautifully furnished and decorated. The Size was not that apparant on board. She did not seem measurable bigger than the Galaxy, except for maybe the Lido area, which was appreciated. All in all I liked the Ship just as much if not more than the Galaxy.

Hi Thad, i'm pleased that you had a good cruise and proved me wrong with your first hand experience! I've not cruise with them since 1998, but I'd like too!

My point was Celebrity seem to be getting less rave reviews than they did in the late 1990's. Maybe we have come to expect too much from them?

I'm sure that they are still very good!

Any more Celebrity opinions?

I just returned from a 2 week cruise on the Mercury around S. America. The service was excellent especially after my wife got terribly sick. The room steward checked on her every 10 minutes and the assistant waiter would make paper roses for me to take to her after dinner. When we had to got into Puerto Madryn for a Cat-Scan, Celebrity arranged all the transportation and waited the whole time for us.
The food was ok but in my opinion not as good as Princess. The Captain was non-existent. He showed up to shake hands at the party for the Captains Club and Left. Never saw him again!

The same happened when I cruised the Mercury in 1998. Maybe it's the samw Captain? What is his name?

I don't think I really want to "hang out" with the captain; I'd much rather that he were busying himself with piloting the vessel.
On the other hand, I felt that the service, cuisine, and general attitude of the staff onboard Infinity last year was the best of our 8 cruises on Celebrity. We're sailing Millennium on April 29th, and I'm looking forward to the same great pampering that we equate with Celebrity Cruises.
