I moved this post on behalf of SailMom in the hope that it will get a response or two:

So...about this Disney Magic...do you have anything to add to the reviews on this site? We're sailing in August with our 3 kids and wondered if it's all as good as it looks in the brochure. I'm from the old school of cruising...started in 1973..and have never been on these new mega-ships. Would welcome comments!

SailMom,

We were on Disney Magic a couple of years ago with our 3.5 and 5 year olds at the time. They had a great time and the kids' programs are some of the best at sea. They have different areas for the different age groups so they are always in a comfortable environment.

The ships themselves are very nice. Some elements are reminiscent of the old days (...I crossed a number of times in the late 50's and 60's) but the ships are thoroughly modern and any link to the past is calculated and done in the Disney way. For example, Animator's Palette looks better in the brochure, the second funnel encloses an ESPN bar and the flowers in Lumière's are plastic....

The layout of the cabins is great - the bathrooms are divided into two separate areas, one of the bath/shower and another for a sink and mirror so two people can get ready at the same time. There is no casino on board but the quality of the entertainment in the main theatre is top notch. There is a separate area for adults - Beat Street/Route 66 but we found that things got quite pretty early. We tried dinner with the kids each night but by the end of the cruise everyone was happier if we got them something to eat earlier and then checked them into the children's program so we could eat together.

Disney's private island is great, but if you want a prime spot make sure you get up early and are one of the first ashore. Overall, we had a good time. Service at the time of our cruise still left a lot to be desired and the food was nothing special. On the other hand, the kids loved it and the pictures/videos are great so I would recommend that everyone try it at least once.

Feel free to post any specific questions you might have.

My family and I sailed on the Disney Wonder, which is basically the same, in 2000. First let me say you and your children will enjoy the cruise and ship immensley.

However, to balance what Joe said, the cabins, while nice, are long and narrow. We found ourselves having to dodge one another constantly going back and forth. If I go again, I might opt for a double wide $$$ cabin, well, maybe not, but is was an annoyance. The only other thing is the kids areas and actiities, while great, seem to be rather impersonal. They check the kids into and out of a computer, there are a lot of kids. But they give you a beeper if you want one. Depending on the age of your kids you can give them authority to check themselves on or out, or reserve that for yourself. If they want to leave activities or need you for any reason they can have the staff page you.

Relax, and enjoy, on balance Disney is Disney, and if you like Disney, you won't be dissapointed. If you don't like Disney, whats wrong with you?

John

Thanks Malcolm for moving this up for me and I appreciate everybody's comments. We'll keep it in mind. My husband has only done 4 night on Big Red Boat, so I'm hoping this will get him hooked!
