A few years ago I did a poll of the worst ship names. I thought that I would try it agian!

"Warlrus" must be one of the worst? I recall that "Song of Flower" was not too popular, either.

Now its your turn!

The Crystal names seem dumb to me, esp. the new SERENITY. Now for others:

WALRUS (the old CROWN MONARCH)
ALBATROS
FANTASY
ECSTASY
SEA DREAM
SUMMIT
ANYTHING followed by "OF THE SEAS"

I think the megastar, superstar names are silly, and the Ren, R1 etc rather uninspiring. But yes, Walrus, conjures up the image of rather a lumbering ugly wallowing ship.

Costa's former Axel Johnson has to be the worst. Imagine telling your friends you took a two week cruise on Axel Johnson.

Not having names but numbers drives me crazy. Premier Cruise Lines totally confused me with the Big Red Boat + numbers thing. What fun to really give a ship some personality in names.

The Big Red Boat stuff was pretty bad. Sounds like those great liners were just bathtub toys... When I come to think of it, Queen Elizabeth-Mary-etc sound pretty bad too, ignoring the historical past of the names. I mean would you like to see a ship christened Senator Clinton 1 or President Bush 33? I would not!...

My, these youngsters do have short memories, do they not Nevadaflip?

Does no one remember the American President Lines?

Does no one remember the "Presdent Cleveland" on the Pacific Circle. Calif-Hawaii-Japan-Hong Kong?

And her sistership, the "President Wilson" on the same route? And the (slightly ) newer "President Roosevelt" (which may still be in service somewhere.)

On the round-the-worlders Passenger-Cargo ships such as the "President Adams"?

And now, some really great contemporary containerships - the "President Truman" (no passengers, sorry)

And many more..

I was a little surprised when NCL went ahead and renamed the Windward the Norwegian Wind. When Princess took over Sitmar, they DIDN'T rename the Fairwind the Wind Princess.

I have to say something about this.

The name has a great history, which should not be underestimated for a second. Axel Johnson is one of the most important persons in Swedish maritime history. He founded the company Johnson Lines in 1891.

Please go here for vast number of pictures of Johnson Lines beautiful ships:

I found this thread and since it was sometime ago the last post was made thought maybe new names could be added.

The first name I would like to ad is the Adonia not only a silly name on it’s own but also the meaning of ADolts ONly IA.

I also would like to ad the new breed of Carnival ships.

Their ship naming started out as names that had to do with something fun like the,
Carnivale
Festivale
Mardi Gras

Then the names had to do with vacations like the,
Tropicale
Holiday
Jubilee
Celebration

Next the naming had to do with something less tangible something that is in reach but can never truly be grasped.
Fantasy
Ecstasy
Sensation
Fascination
Imagination
Inspiration
Elation
Paradise

Currently their ship names are all overly don and can be associated with powerful grandiose ideas and are rather self honouring names that are associated with power plays.
Carnival Destiny
Carnival Triumph
Carnival Victory
Carnival Pride
Carnival Spirit
Carnival Conquest
Carnival Legend
Carnival Glory
Carnival Miracle
Carnival Valor

Are these names synonyms for the way that Carnivals is seeing their position on the cruise market and what can we expect in the future?

Maybe the,
Carnival rules the seas
Carbival tops them all
Carnival and nothing else

Best, Onno

To me one of the least attractive names is "StarShip Leo". The name sounds as if it should be launched into space from Cape Canaveral rather than cruising the oceans...

I agree with Onno that ADONIA is pretty bad. OCEAN VILLAGE and ISLAND ESCAPE are pretty bad too. The worst at the moment, though, must be the MSC LIRICA. Sounds just like one of MSC's containerships... There was also a plan to rename the CROWN (former Royal Viking Line ship now sailing for Spanish interests) into the MARE NOSTRUM CROWN. That might very well have been the worst named passenger ship ever....

Costa Fortuna.
Makes me think about a guy with a thick Italian accent telling people how expensive it was to build the ship, "It a costa fortuna!"

The worst name I can think of now is hard to pick. There is the name Summit, which kinda makes me condure up images of a G8 Summit, most of the of the seas names, by now They wre good for maybe the Soverign of the Seas and her sisters, but the whole fleet, spare one ship? I know there are more but I have to think.

Indeed, "Cost a Fortune " to sail on Costa ships these days....
A far cry when they had to burn a ship every decade to recoup losses!
Seriously, Carnival had the guts to dock the Ecstasy at Cunard berth, whilst tabloid press fought the "E" syndrome in the early 90's!
Never understood how Carnival still sell cruises in the UK?! They had to work very hard for this monumental "gaffe"!
But the very worst in my opinion was those Big red Boats .
It would have been ok on any actual Carnival ship, but not on a classic and historic vessel!!!
ssLewis, avenging desacred steamers!

I either like the names or am totally blase about them. The only one I think is absolutely ridiculous is MARE NOSTRUM CROWN.
However, although a ferry, the most distasteful name I have come across is Ouranos. Not a name one wants to repeat too often!
