I'm just back from my first voyage aboard one of today's new mega liners. Carnival Spirit is vastly different from my favourite ships (Victoria, Canberra, Fairsea/Fairwind, Noordam). While I'm still thinking about many aspects of the voyage, several opinions are worth mentioning.
While the size is immense, it was very easy to move about with a high passenger-space ratio. Very high quality aboard the ship, unlike several new builds for other lines this ship has acres of teak decking as well as marble and leather inside. Very nautical and traditional cabin fittings. Cabins were well laid out, and the bathroom was much larger than on some other lines.
This was my 5th Carnival sailing out of 33 sea voyages, and I must commend Carnival for huge improvements over the years in the quality of their on board service from days gone by. The food, service and entertainment where as good as or better than aboard other lines in the same catagory (NCL & RCCL), and not far off those found on the next tier of companies (Princess/Celebrity/ Holland America). In view of the cost of the cruise, this was a trip with tremendous value for money. Certainly not for everyone, but as long as you know what you have purchased you will not be disappointed. Travelling with me were 2 friends who just did an Atlantic crossing aboard Rotterdam several months ago and the same trip with Celebrity the year before aboard Millenium, several loyal P & O passengers, and some devoted NCL types recently off Norway's trans atlantic sailing as well as an extended Caribbean voyage. All found the Spirit great and Carnival worthy of another voyage.
For ship lovers this a great opportunity to have a look at other ships. We saw: Century, Westerdam, Veendam, Golden Princess, Ocean Prin., Monarch of the Seas, Explorer of the Seas, Carnival Triumph, Norwegian's Sun/Sea/Sky,Universe Explorer, Ocean Breeze, Island Venture, Discovery Sun, Millennium, Costa Atlantica, Enchantment of the Seas, Maasdam, Grand Princess, Wind Surf, Voyager of the Seas, Paradise, Victory, Vision, Grandeur, Fascination, Majesty, Adventure of the Seas,Royal Clipper, Noordam and Sea Cloud II. Now to get all the photos developed and filed.

Interesting group of ships listed as your favorite! Though I've never sailed the Victoria, I have to agree with you on the others as my favorite also. Has been a long time since I've heard anybody mention the Fairwind and Fairsea. Many good times on both!!
