When reading readers reviews I find it very helpful to know how many cruises the reviewer has been on in the past and whenever possible what other ships or lines they've used.

My first cruise was on the Crown Odyssey in 1989 and having nothing to compare it to, it was the best travel experience of my life. In fact I would find it hard to believe a first time cruiser would ever give a one-star review unless the ship sunk or they just didn't care for the cruise experience.

13 years and many cruises later I sometimes re-evaluate my previous cruises keeping in mind you can't really compare a 30 year old ship to one that's a year or two old.

Welcome aboard WhiteStar.

You have made an interesting point. Cruise reviews are very subjective!

For example, I would thoroughly recommend the SS Norway - to those people interested in Ocean Liners and Maritime history. If you are not, I'd recommend that you pick a newer ship!

I thopugh that Celebrity's food was average-good, everyone else onboard seemed to think it was wonderful!

Do other CruiseTalkers have examples where their personnel opinion of a cruise/ship etc. does not agree with that of the majority?

Food on Celebrity

We were on the Mercury, and the food was excellent - wonderful.

The buffets and dinning room menus were equally excellent.

For breakfast you could get a personal omelette made, with whatever ingredients you wanted, and they also had egg beaters to make the omellete with.

Great Cruise Line

I cruised on the Mercury too! Don't get me wrong, the food was not bad by any means, but we did not share everyone elses enthusiasm for it!

Maybe it's a Cultural thing, us being Brits, and the food being to American tastes?

One man's meat is another man's poison!

Personal omelettes (real or otherwise) are available on HAL ships - also fresh squeezed orange juice - smoked salmon with capers too - humus, grits - I'd say just about everything you could desire is available - all in the Lido. Dining room breakfasts also cater to personal choices.

Personally, I like my favourite cereal with lots of fresh fruit.
I've yet to find a ship where every coffee drinker thinks the coffee is good.....even passable - I almost resort to drinking tea!

To each his own..............

Happy cruisin'

We were on Celebrity's Zenith and found the food and service mediocre and not as good as HAL. The best food we experienced on 11 cruises was last year on the Zaandam. I also find the Lido buffet on HAL for Breakfast and Lunch superior to other cruise lines.

I have only been on three cruises, the first one in 1994, on the Cunard Crown Jewel. She was a small ship only about 800 people aboard.I thought then, how could there ever be another cruise as wonderful as that was.The ship was beautiful, food was wonderful, and the crew was great. Then I went on Royal Caribbean, Majesty Of The Seas. That was a huge ship. I found that I did'nt like her as much, because she was so big. I didnt feel the warmth that I had on the Crown Jewel.Everything was great, from the food to the cabins, she was just to big for me. My last cruise was on Royal Olympic, Stella Solaris, in 2000. She was such a pleasure to be on. She was small, beautiful, food was wonderful, and the crew was out of this world. They had a way of making you feel so special. I hate to say that I would be afraid to try her again, because of all the bad reviews I have seen since. My mom was to sail last year, but cruise got canceled after she had flown all the way to Athens. But I have to say she was the best

I have a philosophy about life which can easily be applied to vacations and cruising.

If I really enjoy a destination or ship, I avoid repeating it! Why you may ask? Well if it was to try and repeat it, I'm sure that it would be a disappointment. I might not even choose the same cruise line, next time, let alone ship! To me a large part of the enjoyment is experiencing things for the 'first time'. This of course goes against the grain of those people that have cruise on a ship ten times!

I knew a lady who always stayed in the same Hotel on the same Greek Island, every year, without fail - because she liked it. That's fine, it's her choice! However I often wonder if maybe there is another Hotel, on another Island, that she would like better? She will probably never know! Who knows, maybe she'd prefer a Cruise, but she will probably never find out!

Our 1993 cruise on Zenith, was the best food we have ever had on a cruise i/c the 5* ones. But then it was the flagship of the fleet, perhaps it is always better to be on a "flagship" when there is other new building on way?
