Real ship? It looks nothing like a real ship! Don't the black hull fool you!

It's P&O's 'Aurora' with a QE2 style funnel!

Is this really a drawing of another Cunard ship?

The new vessel was supposed to be one of the Holland America Lines Vista-class vessels (similar to COSTA ATLANTICA, CARNIVAL PRIDE...). The other one will still be delivered to HAL. I don't think it has much in common with the AURORA. Maybe it's more similar to P&O vessels of the SUN PRINCESS-class but it has still a diffenrent hull-design. Maybe the right decision for Cunard.

So what's the deal here...

When it comes to ships like Carnival Spirit and other ships built w/ the same hull - they get lambasted as being ugly and box like...

But when the same thing has a black hull and a red stack w/ black stipes and the name CUNARD on it...suddenly it's a SHIP.

Don't get me wrong - I am glad see Cunard is getting a new ship - but it's no different on the outside than her "sisters".

It will be the interior hardware and software that will determine the "shipliness" of this one.

Attached is a rendering of HAL's Vista Class ships (ZUIDERDAM), which is what the new Cunard ship will be modeled after. Basically, a hybrid of the SPIRIT class ships of Carnival.

which brings me to another question...

Zuiderdam - what is the correct pronounciation of this name...

I have heard "Zooderdam" "Ziderdam" (as in Cider)

Would love to hear from someone who speaks Dutch as I get tired of North American bastardizations of foreign names.

Thanks as always to a great source of information!

Jekyll I asked that same question of a Dutch friend and now I can't remember what they said! Big help aren't I! I think it is Ziderdam (but don't quote me_ - like Zider-Zee - isn't that a river in Holland?

We got our first snowfall yesterday and it was so pretty with all the trees covered in snow - even had lightning and thunder. It's now melting and probably will be all gone tomorrow.

Well said!

It still looks rather like 'Aurora' to me?
Does this picture give us a preview of a future age when you can cruise with any cruise line, on any ship, in any part of the world and essentially be on an identical ship - apart from the decor and smoke stack!

I think a second newbuild for Cunard can only signal that the QE2's days are very numbered!

From the Cunard web site:

Fincantieri to construct new 85,000-GRT liner for British market

Cunard Line's parent company, Carnival Corporation (NYSE: CCL), has signed a letter of intent with Italian shipyard Fincantieri for the construction of a new 1,968-passenger liner to serve the British market. The ship, which will cost approximately $400 million, will be delivered to Cunard in January 2005, just one year after the launch of the line's much anticipated Queen Mary 2.

The order solidifies Cunard's strategic initiative, announced earlier this year, to play a more significant role in the growing
British cruise market. The yet-unnamed vessel will be based in Southampton, and will be built to Panamax standards so it can be deployed on a variety of worldwide itineraries. Britain is the world's second-largest cruise market, with over one
million passengers expected to sail in 2002.

"We are thoroughly committed to expanding our presence in the UK," said Pamela Conover, Cunard's president and chief operating officer. "The announcement of this exciting
new-building project, following on the heels of our re-positioning of Caronia to Southampton as of May 2002, confirms Cunard's determination to maintain our position as
the choice British brand."

In the tradition of her Cunard forbearers, the new ship will boast a covered promenade deck encircling its entire exterior, a forward-facing observation lounge and a large Lido pool with a retractable magra-dome for inclement weather.

Innovative "exterior elevators" with glass walls will uniquely tower 10 decks high on both sides of the vessel. A wide range of accommodations will be available, with 67 percent of outside staterooms and suites offering private balconies.

The on-board entertainment and lecture programme will be designed for UK passengers and the on-board currency will be Sterling. Like Queen Elizabeth 2 and Queen Mary 2, plans call for the liner to have a Queens Grill, which offers single-seating, gourmet dining for passengers in upper-level staterooms.

The ship's powerplant will feature low-emission, diesel-electric motors, and the ship also will employ the Azipod™ propulsion system for greater manoeuvrability, enhanced operating efficiencies and environmental benefits.

The latest waste-treatment technology will be utilized. Cunard Line currently operates the 1,791-passenger Queen Elizabeth 2 and 668-passenger Caronia on award-winning
cruise vacations worldwide.

The 2,620-passenger Queen Mary 2 is scheduled to join the fleet in late December 2003. With the addition of the 1,968-passenger new build, Cunard's capacity will increase by almost 40 percent.

"This is great news for the UK travel agent community who have long supported Cunard and are anxiously anticipating another grand Cunarder," said Conover. "This new liner will
also satisfy the demand of our loyal past passengers for a greater choice of itineraries departing from Southampton."

This is the first ship for Cunard Line by the Italian shipyard Fincantieri, one of the most technically advanced shipbuilders in the world who have built more than 7,000 vessels.

Micky Arison, chairman and chief executive officer of Carnival Corporation, said: "Over the years Carnival Corporation has awarded Fincantieri with many new-building projects and we have every confidence that they will deliver an outstanding new luxury liner for Cunard."

Corrado Antonini, chairman of Fincantieri, said: "We enjoy a very close and long-standing relationship with the Carnival
Corporation and are honoured to be able to build a luxury liner for the respected Cunard brand."

Pier Francesco Guarguaglini, chief executive officer of Fincantieri, added: "This new vessel will exemplify the pinnacle of Italian shipbuilding today. We're confident Fincantieri's craftsmen will deliver a truly splendid new Cunarder."

The new liner's inaugural voyage will be in early 2005, approximately one year after the launch of Queen Mary 2.

Cruise schedules and pricing have not yet been determined.

If you take the Carnival/Cunard press release at face value that the addition of the new ship will increase the number of berths by 40% it means that they are keeping both QE2 and Caronia. The maths don't work any other way! Time will tell what really happens. I understand that Caronia has been taken of the "for sale list" and that the crew have been told that she will remain with Cunard at least until the QM2 arrives.

This is the first time that English speaking cruisetalkers want to know how something is to be said in dutch. I speak dutch myself and I can assure you that there is no word in English or French that uses the same "ui" as in Zuiderdam. So we will have to be happy with something like "Zoyderdam".

its funny to hear everyone all up in arms about designs of future passenger liners on how they are designed.....i must admit that i too love the traditional "normandie" type of style...but we are pressing into the 2ist century and designs do change with time....i must say that...at least cunard is adding new tonnage...hopefully...with traditional names....if a new office tower was to be built....i highly dought the architect would have the tower built in the traditional brick and steel and whatever granite or marble design for the front of the building with the way the dollar is worth and what it would be to build...i would say the same for shipbuilding.....pre-fab and slap those pieces together so we can start making a few bucks to pay her (ship) off is what the cruise lines are thinking....though...you must admit....the unterior is more appealing than the past. art deco whas the thing in the 20's and 30's...but the new millenia asks for more vegas typen of interiors plus a bit of the tradition such as brass...fake wood and marble...oh yea...etched glass.....can you imagine what the next millenia will bring in ocean travel....boy...i sure belted out a few paragraphs...jeff...MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!

gohaze - there's a much more difficult one - being the Holiday season I dare to post the following -

A man and his wife were driving through the beautiful Welsh countryside one
day when they came across a roadsign which reads

"Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch" (The longest town-name in the world).
The husband says the name and his wife laughs.
"That's not how you pronounce it", she says and proceeds to say it herself.
Her husband nearly crashes the car laughing and they start debating how to pronounce the name.
Well the debate soon becomes an argument and coming up to lunchtime they pull into a restaurant in the town whose name is the subject of the argument. As they're settling their bill, the wife says to the cashier,
"Excuse me, but would you mind settling an argument between my huband and me? Could you possibly pronounce the name of where we are, only please do it
very very slowly".

The cashier leans forward and says.....................
.......................................................
.......................................................
.......................................................
.......................................................
"Buuuuuuuuurrrrrrrrrgggggeeeeeeeeerrrrrrrrr Kiiiiiiiiinnnnnnnnngggggggg"

Happy Holidays!!!!
