Sad News:

Passengers on Royal Caribbean's Adventure of the Seas on Saturday heard a most unusual announcement of "Oscar," then "Alpha," over the shipwide public address system. That's never good news as "Oscar" indicates a crew or passenger emergency and "Alpha" is the signal that medical personnel are urgently needed.

Indeed, a 24-year old woman became the new ship's first fatality after she fell off her 9th deck balcony and landed on the fourth deck. The incident occurred at about 5 p.m. and the ship was docked in St. Thomas.

Royal Caribbean's Michael Sheehan has released a statement that merely confirms the obvious facts:

"At approximately 5 p.m. on Saturday, while the Adventure of the Seas was
docked in St. Thomas, U.S.V.I., a 24-year-old female guest (from the U.S.) fell from her ninth deck stateroom balcony. She landed on the fourth deck of the ship. She was immediately attended to by the ship's medical personnel, however, she showed no signs of life, and CPR was unsuccessful.

"The ship immediately notified local Virgin Island authorities, the U.S. Coast Guard and the FBI, which is investigating the matter. Royal Caribbean is cooperating fully with the FBI. Due to the fact that the investigation is not complete, we are unable to discuss the matter in greater detail."

At this time, no other details, such as her name and hometown, have been released.

I heard about this earlier
this week, from a customer of mine. He said the ship was suppose to depart at 6 P.M. And they did'nt leave until 11:30 P.M. He heard it might have been a fight involved. But that's all he knows.

Now that's a new one for the use of the name "Oscar", which just happens to be my maiden name!
Does sound mysterious, doesn't it!

Wow imagine! I can believe that you could "fall" even the older ships had very safe railings! Remember the QE2 chef? mysterious or what! Don want to cast up rumours but on such a modern ship it is hard to believe you could fall over the railings unless you were:
1. Pushed
2. Messing about
3. Escaping something

In years to come I bet rumours will circulate that the ship is haunted and the "The unhappy ghost of a woman stakes the corridors moaning..." Oh well what ever happened God bless her!

First of all sorry for all my posts on this page but I did a bit of detective work and went to the RCCL web page and went to the Adventure of the Seas tour and found a tour of the staterooms! I found this Pic of balcony If you zoom in close to the balcony you can see there is a wall up to about you waist AND a railing! Have a look

Titanic Steve, you should become a Detective rather than a Cruise ship employee!

I am of the opinion that it is just about impossible to fall from a ship by accident!
However, such events do happen from time to time.

Often the cause is horse-play, drink, or both combined! Murder is unlikely and suicide victims often just disappear over the side - the QE2 is a popular venue for this!

But remember, being on a Cruise ship is safer than staying in your own home!

Children and adults have fallen over balconies here in Toronto - usually turns out they were fooling around. With kids it was probably their standing on a chair or table to look over the edge. I remember one adult who tried to climb from his balcony to his next door neighbours and he didn't make it. Stupid - why didn't he go through the front door.

According to reports from passengers on this sailing (including some who claimed to see/hear her fall), she had just come back from one of those all you can drink party boat tours. She was also nude when she fell.

Various reports have her deciding to take a swim, or having an argument with her fiance. There was also a report from a fellow passenger who said that her fiance was arrested.

This is from the RCI BB on Cruise Critic. I make no claims that it is accurate. However, among several reports, there are a few things that keep surfacing, namely that alcohol was involved, she was naked, and the balcony railing did NOT give way (meaning she either jumped, or was pushed).

I doubt we'll ever get the true story...reports I read said she was on her honeymoon.

I can also pass on some other rumors by her fellow passengers. One person said that the victim was on her honeymoon with her new husband. One night security had to be called on them for fighting. Then, I heard that her husband was arrested in St. Thomas. It was also said that he wrecked the cabin right after it happened, saying "she was my whole life". I just hope the whole truth comes out, whatever it is. My heart goes out to the families of both these young people

This is strange! We were on the Adventure last week and it sailed out of St. Thomas right on time. We watched the video last night. Are you sure you have the right date?
Also, I can't see how anyone could "fall" off a balcony. we had one on deck 10 and the railing came up to my chest. I'm 5'3". The only way anyone could get over a railing on one of those balconies would be to stand on a chair, get lifted over, or be incredibly tall. No way! It is enclosed and has a glass shield.

A guy fell off a Carnival ship(?) while trying a bit of 'tigh-rope walking' along the railings!

I agree that someone acting in a normal manner could NEVER fall off!
