There are pros and cons to how good the different cruise ships are. This is my personal feelings about the Celebrity Infinity. The things I'm about to say actually happened. Some people may think I'm too picky while others may not. From October 27th thru November 3rd we took our first Carribbean cruise. I must say I had a wonderful time. There was a day at sea that I felt was a waste of my time. I would have rather spent an extra day in St. Thomas. I figure the ship does this to make a little money on board instead of dropping people off to spend their money in the different ports. You figure you spend from approximately 9am to 5pm in each port. You try to cram in as much as you can in that short amount of time. Not long enough is what I think. I personally would like 2 days in each port. But I'm not on here to review the ports. Once boarded we were escorted to our rooms by our cabin steward who had the biggest smile. He always greeted us each time he saw us and was always very friendly. The only things I would change about this fellow is to get him to stand there and listen to us when we're talking to him. 3 times we were talking to him and evidently we talked too long or got to personal because he would walk away while we were still talking to him so here we were still talking and seeing the back of his head going down the hall as he talked back. I thought he was too busy too talk but still thought it a little rude. I'd also like to teach him to knock a little louder before he entered our room. 3 times during our stay he didn't knock at all. The last time was the last day of our cruise and it was at 7:30 in the morning. Was he trying to tell us something. This I did not like. I realize he had a lot to do to get the ship ready for the next set of guests that I heard would be arriving at 4 pm that same evening but I felt that barging in at 7:30 am was a little rude. Plus before we left he asked us to say some nice things about him and about what a good job he did during our stay. We had already filled out our review card but forgot to put in the extra comments. I personally thought this was a little nervy of the guy but went ahead and said some nice things since he did see to it that our cabin was clean each day. Speaking of the cabin. Our cabin was on the 8th floor or Panorama Deck. We had an outside stateroom with a veranda. It was a very nice room. It was a little cramped getting around the king-sized bed but other than that not too bad. There was a love-seat / hide-a-bed. The veranda was small but nice with 2 chairs and a small table. I loved being able to look out in the morning at the next stop or to be able to go out for some fresh air. I was unhappy that they took the beach towels out before we left. I forgot to go down and buy one but before we had actually vacated our room the guy came in and took our beach towels. So I wasn't able to buy one. I felt like like they had to get those towels out before the guests stole them all. So make sure you buy the towel before the last few days if you want one at all. The pool area and music was really top notch. 2 pools and 4 whirlpools all in one area with a deck up above all around overlooking the pool area. They had buffets around every day at different times out in the open. Plus a buffet area that served breakfast and lunch. Recessed into the wall not too far from the pool. The Carribbean flavor music was very good and lots of fun. The group could actually carry a tune which is always nice. I loved them. They really got the crowd moving. There was also a covered pool nearby which was in the Hydro therapy area. It was a beautiful setting but a little too humid for me. They had private rooms you could close off with 2 tables and 4 chairs in each room. The hair salon, day spa & gym were next door. All were wonderful. Well it is 8pm in my area and the jet lag is catching up to me so I will write more tomorrow about my dining experiences. I will say the SS United States Restraurant was excellent. More tomorrow.

A really different point of view. I wait for more.

On the day at sea, did the ship slow right down just to kill time?

Yes, the ship did seem to slow way down on our day at sea. Also the day we left St. Croix they really sped to St. Lucia and did so in one night. If you were to look at their map it wouldn't take a rocket scientist to figure out we wouldn't need to spend the extra day at sea. For me it was a waste of time & boring. The way I look at is we missed out on a day at a beautiful white sand beach with crystal clear aqua colored water. I felt it was their day to cash in on the guests. It's their ship so they do have that right. I'd personally spend the time on land rather than on a ship. If we'd payed for this trip ourselves I would've booked 7 days at St. Thomas & Antigua and split the difference between the 2 islands. Spending 1 day at each island from approximately 9am to 5 pm is just not enough time. That's not to say I didn't enjoy the cruise. If given another cruise I'd gladly jump at the chance.

And then there is the flip-side of the coin: Those of us who prefer sea days!!!
If I wanted to bask on the beach - I'd book a land holiday.

The best days are sea days!!!

Oneredwon, I respect your opinion. As you are probably aware, there are two distinct school of thought, 'sea days' verses 'ports'.

Now a few years ago I would have said that I booked a cruise because of the ports that were visited. I too found sea days a little boring. However I'm starting to change my mind! I recently did a Transatlantic and really enjoyed the sea days! Although I must say that the quality of entertainment and company would paly an important part for me!

Some people actually book a cruise because it has a high number of days at sea. In fact some people don't even leave the ship in port! With ships becoming more like giant resorts, I begin to see the attraction!

Some Brits do the QE2's 6 day trip to NY, arrive in the morning, only to depart few hours later, on the QE2 for the return leg home!

A cruise with two or three days at Sea, plus some nice ports of call, would be regarded as a fair compromise by most cruise passengers!

Please exercize grace toward the workload of the stewards and waiters on the mega ships. I do regret not making time to learn more about the people on the ships who make my trip pleasant. And tell them stories of the USA. Yet, the lines are geared to profit, which is stoked by efficiency. Sometimes the stewards' noteworthy behavior is a misinterpreted illustration of good work habits.

Yes the steward was extremely busy. It turns out he has a wife and kids and is away from them for 8 months working something like 12 hour days. On the last day of the cruise after we leave the ship the crew has to have the ship totally restocked, cleaned & ready to go that same day by 4pm. Or so I heard.

P.S. That might explain why when I was talking to him & he kept on walking. I have to admit I can go on & on at times. I guess I take after my Father. My Mother used to call me long distance to have me call her back so their telephone would ring at the family business. My Dad was always talking to someone and wouldn't get back to work. So by me calling he would hear the phone ring. He would say goodbye to whoever he was talking to answer the phone and I would tell him what a talker he was getting to be. I'm not quite that bad though. My husband never has to do that. The cabin steward was very nice and friendly otherwise.

I was very interested in your review, since we will be doing the same cruise in Feb. We will also be on the Panoramic Deck(8120)with a balcony. I actually got a chance to see the exact cabin we will be in,when the Infinity was docked in Vancouver. We chose this itinerary for the many ports. Five in one week is unusual. Usually you get three or four. I like the sea days to sleep in and relax. I have been to St. Thomas a couple of times, but not the other islands. What did you do in the ports? Which excursions did you take, if any. Which beach on Antigua did you go? I want to hear MORE!
P.S. Always lock the dead bolt when in your cabin!

I have been extremely busy since getting back from our cruise. I will talk about more things when I find the time. I have a short amount of time today. I will tell you though We took the eco-cruise in Antigua. The boat was not a catamaran and there was not a lot of shade but it really flew. I really enjoyed the experience. Lots of beautiful scenery. I will write about it as soon as I can.
