I live about one and one-half miles from the shore (Raritan Bay) quite a distance from the Verrazano but often hear fog horns and do see some freighters when out walking. As for the Verrazano Bridge there is a great viewing spot in a park practically under the bridge. Some 30 years ago when I worked in NYC skyscraper I would read the NY Times to see what was sailing in and out. The most majestic, I believe, was the Rotterdam (Rembrandt) and the Norway (SS France). Whenever they sailed out of NY it seemed to me that the City stopped and tipped its hats. Of course, traveling from SI to NYC by ferry is the best way to go for a sea romantic like me. I did it for 13 years and do it occasionally now just to enjoy myself. We just recently sailed on the Carnival Victory and I had the somewhat the same old feeling when she sailed out. She was just screaming "I'm a big girl but I'm beautiful. Hope you get a chance to visit
sometime we're seeing more and more ships which is a good thing. Regards

Oceansdevine, great point. It's a wonderful thing to see so many ships back in New York again. I live close by myself, and I often go down to the New York Waterway ferry terminal in Weehawken to watch the ships depart on the weekends. I just hate the long off-season, though. It's so depressing.

P.S., if I'm not mistaken (my office is 5 miles from the terminals), I think I see the Royal Princess in today.
