Here is a photo of the new Norwegian Sun's funnel with the new NCL logo on it. What do you think of it? While it is certainly an improvement I still think it is boring, unimaginative, and unmemorable. I wish NCL would come up with something better.

Funnel with new logo:

i agree with you...it can get better. If you look closely, you can see the old logo under the new one!

Let’s carry out a quick psychoanalysis and delve into the subconscious meaning of the past and present NCL Logo's.

The old NCL logo has a single wavy line, obviously representing a "wave". In turn this obviously represents the sea level. The text chosen is very formal and upright using a tall narrow font. The wave passes through two thirds of the body of the text. This is very significant, obviously being symbolic of a ship that is sinking beneath the waves! Like an iceberg, only the last third is revealed above the waves. The gold frame around the logo confines the design, is very angular, suggesting a formal and restrictive style of cruising. The choice of gold obviously was an attempt to represent a 'high class 'product. However in the post-modern era this colour has come to represent cheap and tacky, formal and rigid. This old design clearly reflects a lack of confidence from NCL, in their product, in what is a highly competitive market place.

Now we can juxtapose the above with the new version. The new logo has a graduated background of shades of blue, providing a depth to the overall image. The logo shows two bolder waves which flow more curvaceously. The whole design is much less angular; in fact they have cut the bottom of the plate off to match the wave, giving a softer, less formal feel. The design still has a partial light blue frame, but it is no longer confined by a harsh full frame - it has been metaphorically set free! The text, still representing the ship, but is now a majestic white colour, rather than Las Vegas gold. The font is now italic and appears relaxed, rounder and broader to reflect a new kind of free and easy (Freestyle) cruising offered by NCL. Most importantly the text, once again represents the ship, but this time it is riding high above the waves. I get a "phoenix rising from the flames" kind of feel. I sense a new confidence from NCL, in their future and their product.

Of course I could just be talking ‘balls’ (as usual) and the new logo makes no difference so is a complete waste of money?

Malcolm, did they offer you a job at NCL? How I wish we would see more proper funnel colours again, and logo's without lettering in them...

Cheers,

Ralph

Good point RD77, the great Cunard ships did not need to write "Cunard" in big letters on the funnels! (No job offers yet, but I am available...)

Bring back the old red, buff or blue racked funnels is what I say!!! I hate the new cruise ship funnels! But however I think that Carnival has got it right!? They dont need to write 'CCL' on their funnels because we all know who they are by the shape and colour of the funnels! Why dont others try this? Make things bit more interesting!

I like NCL's very original design. There where no letters were on the funnel, just a nice color scheme. Now, as you may know this was back when the C stood for Carribbean. The least creative was the logo with a Norweigan flag. It didn't have much color or personality. I still like the original. The only place there where the letters was on the hull. The also had nice pinstripes, too.

I don't like it. First of all, the wavy lines are too reminiscent of the wavy hair on the Princess logo.

Second, the san serif type does not match the
serif type of the Norwegian sign below.

I think it looks rather cheesy.

I've noticed that the only "Norwegian" thing about an NCL ship is its name - there's nothing interior wise, apart from a few maps and charts in stairtowers and corridoors, that suggest anything Norwegian about them. OK, I understand that the cruise line was founded in the 70's in Norway, but to me thats as traditional as NCL gets.
In my opinion, the big guys at the helm should do something along the lines of changing names of public rooms to reflect Norwegian culture and heritage...or something.
Beezo: I find it reflective of consumer opinion of NCL staff - they couldnt even be bothered taking the old logo off, they just plastered the new one over the top!!!
Just out of curiosity, what are all of your favorite cruise line logos??

Favorite cruise line logos: Royal Caribbean's crown and anchor, Crystal Cruises seahorses, and my favorite of all time was the red bird used for the old Royal Viking Line.

Here is the Royal Viking Logo in gold:

Least favorite: NCL's blue box

By the way, someone wanted to see NCL's original colors. Here is the Sunward II first in the orginal colors, and then with the terrible flag logo.

Lets face it - NCL seem to have been struggling to get anything right for a few years now! I have to say that I agree the original was the nicest, but does anyone remember if there were designs on the hulls?
On Seawing (neé Southward) last year, gettin on the tender for Santorini I saw the outline in the hull of a large sun or something along those lines...anyone any pictures? I also remember seeing under the Airtours logo on the funnel the flag logo, at least I think so anyway.

Paddy.

P.S. I've said it before and I'll say it again - the new logo reminds me of a soap brand! Bad Bad Bad

I have to agree w/ you - I cannot think of ANY cruise line in history that has changed their logos and funnels more than NCL...they seem to be having a really hard time finding an identity....

As for the hulls - they had a blue stripe along the side w/ a yellow sun at the aft end of it...no pics of it though - sorry...

Personally, the new NCL logo looks a little cheap. They need a new, racy logo with a picture of the Valtur Prima on the logo, because it used to be the Stockholm.

They should not have glued their new logo on the old, which was dumb. They should have tossed the old logo into the sea.

Jesse...I don't understand how the Valtur Prima (ex Stockholm of Swedish America Line) connects w/ NCL's logo - can you please explain?

Hey,
My favorite Logo's....hmm. I would hae to say Royal Caribbean's anchor thing. Its nice. Also, I kinda like Star Cruises Compass that they have. I think Fred. Olsen's is ok...by the way...does anybody have ny idea what it symbolizes???? I have no idea.

I dont really like NCL new one. Just Doesnt fit with them. I think they should go for something along the lines with the Norwegian Flag. I understand that they dont do that probably because they dont want to be a Norway based line (I know that probably sounds weird). WhatI mean is that they probably want to be more international.

I dont really know what they could do for a new logo. I have to admit that i do like the former "Majesty Cruise Lines" logo. But it wouldnt go good with NCL. I also do like the old ROYAL VIKING LINE logo.

Any thoughts??

Brian

By the way, I just wanted to say that I still very much enjoy NCL, regardless of their logo. I, personally, think that they are a great cruise line.

Brian

P.S. wasn't "Norwegian Cruise Line"'s old name "Norwegian Caribbean Line"??

Its old name was Norwegian Caribbean Line. Also, teh Stockholm connecting to NCL is that the Stockholm was Scandinavian, although not Norwegian.

Norwegian Flag could do, or an outline of Norway?

Ok, I think the answer to our problem is obvious. We need to have a competition to see who can desing the best new logo for NCL- we will post all of the proposals, and when its done we will send them to NCL. How does that sound?
