The ship is in service on Odessa – Istanbul line. The photo was taken this August in Odessa, Ukraine.

Do you know the history of this vessel?

I do not know, but i think, it has about 5000 tons.
There was in former times a series of about
19 ships, each with 5000 tons, built in the
former "DDR" in Wismar, for the former Soviet Union.

One of these ships was in Transocean Cruise offer in Western Germany under the name:

"ESTONIA".

An other i see in 1983 in Honnigsvag, North Cape, the Name was "MARIYA YERMOLOVA".

It was in the harbour together with "ALEKSANDR PUSHKIN" and the boat on which i sail "THE VICTORIA" (Chandris Lines).

This was my first cruise with an Western Company, my first Cruise with "Chandris",
the former Mother of CELEBRITY CRUISES.

It is my favourite Cruise Line.

So, i guess, it is one of the "Estonia-class".

This ship was build at MTW yards in Wismar but it has nothing to do with the ESTONIYA-class ships. It was a seperate series of 11 expedition vessels built for the Soviet Union (the four last ones with a slightly different design due to their function for the Hydrometerology service for the USSR).
technicql dates:
5460 grt
length: 124,20 m
beam: 17,00 m
draft: 5,94 m
two MAN-MH diesels (8000 PSe)
The first one delivered to the Akademik of Science of the USSR in March 1965 was the AKADEMIK KURCHATOV.
The GLORIYA should normally be the former AKADEMIK VERNADSKIY which was build in 1967.
Other ships of this series are:

PROFESSOR VIZE (1966)
AKADEMIK KOROLEV (1966)
AKADEMIK SHIRSHOV (1967)
PROFESSOR ZUBOV (1967)
DIMITRIY MENDELEEV (1967)
ABKHAZIYA (1971)
ADZHARIYA (1972)
BASHKIRIYA (1972)
MOLDAVIYA (1973)

Well done, Patrick.

You've solved the riddle. This ship is indeed from these series. Her first name was AKADEMIK.
Do you know where the others veseels of these series are?

It's also interesting that BASHKIRIYA & ADZHARIYA were named for the second time since the USSR already had the ships with such names (from MIKHAIL KALININ series) as well as MOLDAVIYA (KIRGHIZSTAN series) and ABKHAZIYA (of 1939, ex MARIENBURG, ex LENSOVIET)

Academy of Science of the USSR also had a huge research vessels with enormous satellite aerials on the top - KOSMONAVT YURIY GAGARIN and AKADEMIK SERGEY VAVILOV.

Did you hear anything about these vessels?

The AKADEMIK SERGEY VAVILOV was once used for a movie, but I forgot the name of it.
Both ships still remain in possession of the Russian Federation. An interesting construction !
It's indeed interesting why the names BASHKIRIYA and ADZHARIYA were used a second time, especially because the ships of both series were build by the same yard.
Unfortunately I did not folow the history of all vessels of this type because they have not much to do with passenger service. But I'll see what I can find out.
