FESTIVAL Cruises has cancelled a cruise by its new flagship European Vision because of troubles related to its Azipod propulsion system.

The 58,000 GT Vision, recently delivered by
France’s Chantiers de l’Atlantique, suffered a technical failure during a regular Mediterranean tour from Marseilles to Genoa,
where it arrived on July 5.

The company tried without success to
repair the problem last night, and at midnight announced to its 1,800 passengers that the cruise would be cancelled. All passengers were repatriated at Festival’s expense, and they will be refunded in full or offered another cruise.

The European Vision is now awaiting repair in a Genoa dockyard and is expected to start
cruising again on August 11.

These new state-of-the-art propulsion systems do not seem very reliable in my humble opinion?

Comments Please?

Texas:

This is very interesting. Hope this does not spoil your plans for sailing on her in August.

In any event, I will be waiting for your review.

whilst I am no engineer the thought of two anzipods driving an 80,000 ton ship does surprise me. The force of power that has to be transmitted through two right angles as opposed to a direct force onto the thrust block does seem to produce a tremendous strain on a rotating leg. A further point is that instead of twin propellers and rudders there are two anzipods. In the event of one or both hitting the bottom the ship will have lost both power and steering ability. In addition the cruise ships with this form of drive do seem to being a number of problems. The advantage is presumably manouverability.

Is it my imagination or have there been a lot problems with azipod units on a number of ships? Maybe they weren't such a great idea after all.

Hi...I cannot see that losing a normal propeller gives better manoevrability than losing use of an azipod. In fact because of it's 360 degree capability I would much prefer the azipod.
Once, many years ago, I had the dubious honor of knocking a blade off the wheel on an icebreaker. We then knocked two more off and I can assure you trying to run on one blade is a no-go. A Navy UDT team of six divers replaced 3 blades underwater in 36 hours working straight through. A tremendous job. After that, I too became a diver.

Clarification:

To Texas:

What I meant was that I did not know when your cruise was in August, and thought it might have been cancelled, and changed to another date.

Happy Cruising

I sail on her in January.

8th August - Good News

Festival Cruises is pleased to report that the fault which caused the cancellation of the recent Mediterranean cruise of European Vision has been identified and repaired. A small electrical problem developed in the system controlling one of the propellers.

Festival is satisfied that the fault has now been rectified. Further checks will take place over the next 24 hours and a sea trial will be effected before the vessel resumes her cruise programme on Saturday, 11th August in Marseilles.

I think azapod is horrible. Yes, the Paradise has had numerous problems, so have other azapod ships. I think it is unreliable. Carnival has to change the seal every 15 months, to prevent them from braking.

On my last cruise with Princess I spoke with the captian about the new Azipod system and why Princess was not going to use them on their new ships. He said the advantage in manuverability was minimal, and the cost of maintainance and repairs outweighed any fuel/space advantage. And he said the final decision not to use pods was based on their lack of long term reliability.

At the time I thought Princess was behind the times (given that every other large line was using pods). Now I think they are the smartest of the bunch.

Texas:

Thanks for your review and comments. I was hoping it would be better. But I appreciate your thoughts.

We will sail on Euro in January. Have 2 cabins booked. Do not think I can change now as there was a $500 deposit each - $2,000 Canadian which is not refundable, it said.

There is a lot of advertising about this ship in our Canadian papers. Our TA had a full page ad for several days, and she is the one who recommended it. They say it is premium crusing at affordable prices.

So, it is true, you get what you pay for.

Hopefully by January it might be improved, if not we will try to enjoy the ports of call.

I presume that they had comment cards to be filled out.

If it has not improved, I will stick with the better lines - HAL, Princess, Celebrity, which I have sailed on.

Correction:

The non refundable deposit was $250 per person - $1,000 for 2 cabins.

Lillian, re your cruise on the Euro.

I believe that thr tour operator is Regent, a subsidary of Air Transat. They have other cruise lines available in their brochure.

I suggest that you contact them and ask for your booking be transferred to an alternative cruise.
I suggest that you accept an "administrative fee" from the tour operator.
We did this frequently in the short time that I was connected with Canadian tour operators. The fee may be $50 per person. It might be better to do this than paying in full for a disaster.

As you may know, I have great reservations about Festival ships after recent experience.
