Grand Princess last week had a run-in with a batch of killer bees when it returned to Ft. Lauderdale’s Port Everglades from a western Caribbean cruise.

The bees, according to Florida agriculture staffers, were likely picked up in Mexico. They were found clustered on the ship’s outdoor basketball court.

Nobody was injured though this breed of bees,
which originated in Africa and spread west in the 1950s, is considered quite aggressive.

While it isn’t common to find them stowing away, so to speak, on a cruise ship, it’s not an unprecedented occurrence; cruise ship and Florida Department of Agriculture employees are trained to watch for them.

Princess Cruises explained that they only used volunteer staff for the 'Bee watch'. Princess also denied rumours that they had attempted to charge the bees for their onboard stay.

I read this yesterday, and E-mailed several of my ex cruise table mates. Can you imagine, if a passenger was actually attacked and killed by killer bees on a cruise ship? What a very bizzare way to die!
How did your Grampa die? "Oh he was attacked by killer bees on a cruise ship"
