Infinity heads to Victoria for repairs 13/06/01 Infinity sails tonight from Vancouver to Victoria Shipyard where it’s due to arrive at dawn Thursday to begin repairs on a faulty ball bearing unit in its starboard Mermaid pod. The work is expected to take five days and if all goes as planned, the ship should be back in service on June 22. George Kowalski, director of international marketing for the Vancouver and Victoria shipyards, tells Seatrade Insider it was quite a feat to make way for Infinity. The Victoria’s graving dock is the only facility in the region large enough to handle Infinity (the dock is 358.64mtr long and 38.4mtr wide and can take vessels up to 100,000dwt). But the space was already occupied by a Navy ship and a fishing boat. They had to be moved, and it took three days for customised keel blocks to be built for Infinity. Kowalski says the vessel did not experience an actual problem with the bearing unit but crew suspected it was ‘deteriorating. The ship did not break down. She was going 22 knots.’ Celebrity officials ‘decided not to wait until calamity strikes but to do something immediately,’ Kowalski adds. Delivered by Chantiers de l’Atlantique in February, Infinity is still under warranty so the yard will pick up the repair tab. Last January, sister ship Millennium underwent a two-week drydock to repair an underperforming electric motor that operates one of its two pods.
