Fred Olsen’s new ship, Braemar (ex Crown Dynasty ) will have her hull modified as part of a $10m pre-service renovation. Director Nigel Lingard said the aft would be enlarged to take more bunkers and water.

“She is a bit tight on capacity for a 14-day cruise,” he added.

Competing bidders for the interior and external work are visiting the ship this week in Tenerife.

Mr Lingard said he expected contracts to be awarded next week for work in a North European shipyard.

Regards

Paulo Mestre

14 day cruises are popular with us Brits. Olsen is selling her as a 750-800 berth ship, so her original passenger capacity will be reduced. I still think that this is a little tight for a 19,089 ton ship? The Black Watch, for example is more spacious.

Paulo, I'm not sure which press release came first, mine or yours:

*******************************************

Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines has announced the appointment of McNeece as interior design consultants for its newly acquired ship
Braemar.

McNeece is no stranger to cruise ship design having worked previously for Fred. Olsen on
its ship Black Watch, as well as many of the most luxurious cruise ships in the world, including the QE2, Oriana and Aurora, R Cruises new ships R One to R Eight, and The World of Residensea.

McNeece will be working closely with members of the Olsen family who take a great personal interest in the interior design of their
passenger vessels. Whilst McNeece will be responsible for redesign of public areas and selection of furniture - and will coordinate the entire design programme - the Olsens will
be involved in selection of fabrics and colour schemes, as well as all the artwork and sculptures to be placed around the new vessel.

...I hope to get to tour Braemar and have a meal on her, in August.

I shall report back and let CruiseTalk know what I find!

As far as I heard from the staff on board Black Watch; Braemar will meet Black Watch in Dover on july 8th. They will tranfer a lot of goods and crew and Breamar will sail to a German Dry dock untill the first cruise begins.
The crew will come from Black Watch (1/3) and Black Prince together with a lot of new people. Some of them (mostly entertaiment staff) are now on board Black Watch for training.
Captain Arne Solberg (now BW) will command the ship for the first sailings.

Welcome back Johan! How was the Black Watch cruise? Who was the Cruise Director and Captain? How was the food and entertainment?

You must write a review for our 'review section', the Black Watch only has two - one good, one bad! See Menu left: 'Submit a Review'

Hello Malcolm
A few answers to your questions:
I did enjoy my cruise:
Positive things: lots of public spaces, nice lunch and midnight buffets, friendly and familiar atmosphere, general condition of this 30 years old ship, no waiting lines, lots of free extra's

Not so positive things: old people sleeping (and snorring) in public spaces. Dinner selections limited, British food (always the same vegetables; gelly puddings), high brochure prices, empty disco and empty ship after midnight.

The captain and cruisedirector were Arne Solberg and Michael Burke.

I think my English is too bad to write a complete review

Johan

There's nothing wrong with your English - wish my command of a language other than my native tongue was one quarter as good. I hardly get beyond every day saluations

Happy cruisin'

Johan, your English is fine, you should really write a review!

I found the Black Watch to be charming, as you said, with lots of public spaces. I enjoyed the food...but it is aimed at Brits. The entertainment was very good in my opinion too.

Yes, my cruise was full of very senior seniors - but many were great people. But they don't disco dance into the night do they!
