I have booked a Canadian Maritime Provinces cruise on the CARNIVAL VICTORY...if anyone has feedback, please advise:

How does the food compare to RCCL (my last cruise - almost 10 years ago ).

Will I have to wear a suit to dinner? If so, I will eat at the casual venues - I HATE dressing for dinner!!

I have an outside cabin w/portholes...are the Maritime Provinces nice?

I'm sorry I can't reply to your questions regarding the cruise, however in response to your question "are the maritime provinces nice?", the answer is no.....they are fabulous!! I have taken several road trips and was wondering what a cruise would be like . The scenery is fantastic and Halifax harbour and the city is wonderful. Have a great cruise. Can't wait to hear your report.

Thanks, Marabella. I believe the cruise goes to both Halifax and St. John, with a couple of sea days. I am PUMPED. I have seen pics of the coastline, and it looks gorgeous. I was just curious about things to do, etc. Don't think I will do any organized tours - they are always a ripoff. Most likely I will go off on my own...

Gee, I was hoping for more feedback. I really would like to know more about the ship from people at this website...

I am in cabin 1202, starboard side. I paid the single supplement, can't room w/strangers...

Rex,

I saw the Carnival Victory in NY Harbor docked next to the Pacific Princess. She made the PP look like a ferry.

Greyhound/Trailways on the 00 hour has express service to Manhattan from Philly for $20 one way. From Port Authority to the cruise terminal is a 10 block cab ride north.

Take 2nd seating on first day, you do not want to miss being on deck for sailing out of NY Harbor

I wear warm weather business casual on formal nights.

A dress shirt and tie will be fine

If you go 2 Bar Harbor, forget the organized tour to Acadia National Park. There is a local free shuttle bus that takes you on the loop, and the stops are every 1/2 hour. It runs on Natural gas so not to pollute.

Check out the Halifax Maritime Museum, the Citadel, city park next door, and the district of painted lady Victorian houses.

Quebec City is stunning. If not for the American cars, you would think you were in Brussels.

Have a great trip.

Thanks, Desirod! Your opinion is important, as you are a cruise maven and fellow Philadelphian. I wanted to take the Philly-Trenton rail line, and then take the train from Trenton to NYC, is the bus ride cheaper?I may go to Structure and get some nice khakis and polo shirts. I have a couple of good suits, one will suffice. There will be two sea days, and one day in Halifax and one day in St. John, NB. Will definitely do the Titanic exhibit and the Black Nova Scotia Museum (I feel SO ignorant - did not even know black people lived in Nova Scotia!!). Don't know anything about St. John. Then a post-cruise stay in NYC. I am in Cat 1A on the lowest deck, all the way forward. Oh God, if we get hit, I hope you all will miss me...

My main concern is the type of passenger Carnival attracts. I have read all the horror stories at this BB, so I hope I don't run into the "gold chain" crowd that has been discussed here...we will have to see...regardless...I am SO PUMPED!

Hello Rex,
You will enjoy the cruise very much. I have
done this cruise 3 times, twice Bermuda was
part of the itinerary. It is one of my very
favorites. The I have never sailed on the
Victory so I cannot advise. You should
expect some rough seas.....I always have
experienced them on the NE/Canada cruises.
I wouldn't let that bother me though. I
wish you a great cruise and let us know
all about it upon your return.

Rex, Trailways-Greyhound is on Filbert St. behind Market East station. Buy your bus ticket the day b4 and avoid any lines. It is a faster trip than Jersey transit, the 00 buses have no stops, and the seats are more comfortable than the commuter trains. The price is about the same.

In NYC, the Metropolitan Museum of NY has the Dupas panels from the Normandie in the cafeteria. Bronze doors from Normandie are on the doors of our Lady of Lebanon church in Brooklyn Heights.

The Halifax museum has some interesting ships
from both world wars and you can walk thru them.

I have never been on a Carnival cruise, so I can't make any judgements, you fill us in.

Rex:

I've cruised on the Victory and can share some about the ship. I've been on the QE2, Norway, and 4 Carnival ships -- you shouldn't have any trouble with the "gold chain" crowd, as you put it. Carnival doesn't deserve the image it has on this board.
You will have to wear a suit for dinner on the formal night, or go to the "seaview bistro," as they call it. Or, you could have dinner in your cabin -- room service offers the dinner menu.

Be sure and check out the afternoon tea in the Ionian Room -- a wonderful room, with live classical music. Also, the Victory has a great outdoor promenade on Lobby Deck, which should be perfect for viewing the coastline if you don't have a balcony. My favorite lounge was the piano bar -- great singalongs, if you like that. But, be sure to get there about 10 minutes before it opens, or you won't get a seat at the piano, as it fills up fast.

My experience on all Carnival ships is that they are overwhelming the first day, but by the end of the cruise you will think they're great.

Can't compare the food to RCCL, but it's better than NCL, both service wise and quality. Carnival also has great 24 hour pizza, and the Victory has a wonderful NY deli and Chinese restuarant. I'd be interested to see what you think of the dining room service, now that they have 3 servers for each table. Please let us know what you think of this new arrangement, as I don't think any other lines have this.

Wow. Thanks for responding everyone...I appreciate your review, Nathan. How is the Med Buffet I keep hearing about? Did you like it? I only have my RCCL/Admiral cruises of a dozen years ago to compare it to - so I don't know either, cruise ship food has changed a lot since then I am sure. Before, you could eat in just two places - the dining room and the Lido Buffet. Now there are so many choices. I will eat at least once in each venue - but I wanna save room for the lobster bake in St. John's.

The Mediterranan is where the Chinese, New York Deli, Pizzaeria and Hamburger stand are located, as well as a large buffet for hot food. I never actually sampled the buffet on the Victory, but I did on the Triumph, and it was OK. THe food in the dining rooms is better. But, for lunch, don't miss the deli and the chinese. The Pizza is also great, but since it's open 24 hours, I always tried it late in the evening/early morning. The pizzaria also has great Ceasar salads, and be sure to ask for grilled chicken on top.

Thanks Nathan. Do the crowds get to be too much? I mean, there isn't a lot of pushing and stuff is there? How much does the caviar in the caviar bar cost?

We never had a problem with crowds. I'm not sure about the caviar bar, because I hate caviar. I can tell you that the Haagan Daaz milk shakes were about $5.
