Can anyone tell me whatever happened to the Curnad Ambassador?? Came across some photos taken on her in 1973 and was wondering what happend to her.

She was scrapped in 1997. Here's some information from Cunard's web site.

Cunard Ambassador became Sunward II for Norwegian Cruise Line, and then Triton for Royal Olympic. Not sure where she is trading now, but has been chartered out frequently over the last few years.

Grant,

It was the Cunard Adventurer that became the Sunward/Triton - she was the Ambassador's sister ship.

The Ambassador left the Cunard fleet in 1974 after being damaged by fire at sea. She was sold to the C. Clausen Co. in Copenhagen and rebuilt as livestock carrier Linda Clausen.

Thanks everyone. The pictures were of the family in my parents stateroom. I drove them to NYC to pick up the ship and in those days visitors could board the ship for the parties. I can remember standing of the pier watching the folks on the ship throw the streamers just like in Love Boat. Times certainly have changed.
I'll look around to see if there are any pictures of the ship, may have been some from they purchased from the photo shop.
If so I'll post them.

Joe-you're right I missed the last name totally and had forgotten all about her.
Nathan-her first fire was while at sea while deadheading from Florida to a Gulf of Mexico port. While off Key West a fire in the engine room got out of control, and burned into the passenger portions of the vessel. The insurance company wrote her off. She was rebuilt as a sheep carrier; but again was hit by a fire, this time in her engine control room. I think this occured in the South China Sea, as she ended up awaiting her fate in Singapore. Scrapping was the outcome after a second write off by the insurers.

She was under charter to Bahama Cruise Line at the time of the fire. She was intended to fill in on 3 and 4 day cruises to the Bahamas while the Veracruz 1 was fitting out. After her fire, I believe the old Ariadne was grabbed as an emergency replacement. Also used at the time were the Atlas and the Southward. the crew abandoned her and motor lifeboated into Key West. I think a burst fuel line over the main engines caused the flash fire. It was a similar design to the Prinsendam with the fuel lines running over the engines. Not a great arrangement.
